Does anyone know of a college in California that has a good music department? My goal is to go into music education and continue on with my clarinet playing as well. I would prefer one with a marching program.

From a southern california viewpoint, any of: USC, UCLA, CSU Fullerton, CSU Long Beach, SDSU. There's many others (one of the great things about having so many choices of schools) that offer many specializations in different areas of music too, so I'd definitely ask around; especially of people that are already your profession of choice (music ed.); program directors, teachers, conductors, etc...

Years ago when I was thinking of going back to school, I called the clarinet prof @ UC Berkeley and he told me that if I want to perform, NOT to come to Berkeley. They have a good theory dept, but in the Bay Area, Cal State Hayward has a very good ed department and excellent ensembles. No marching band, but I find that to be a plus. Friendly dept too- I finally went back to school there.
