 Anyone have similar experience?

Alright. So I just received my shipment of Rico Reserve Classic reeds from wwbw today. Here's the thing...

About 3 of the reeds were either chipped, frayed, or cracked. This is something common with reeds I get from Rico, which I used to get the cheapo box at the music store for beginners. I had these reeds suggested to me by a teacher, and I got them for trial. But they're so... They look like someone cut them by hand with a reed knife. Even the tip's curve, it looks like someone took scissors and cut the curve themselves.

They play decent, but some of these flaws make me worry that the reed's going to die quicker. Shed some light?

I haven't had this experience with Rico reeds, but since you have, you should contact Rico directly. This is something they need to know.

I can't say that I've ever had this problem with Rico reeds. I usually expect the cheap orange boxes will have a number of duds in them but the few times I have bought the Reserves they have generally been pretty good. Sounds like you may have gotten a box that shouldn't have passed QC. If the reeds were all visibly flawed right out of the box I would contact Rico and see if you can get a replacement box.

I've played, and taught using thousands of them, and not had that problem. I've heard of it before, but haven't experienced it myself, nor with my students. If I did, I'd tell them right away.

A dud is a dud, that happens, and is subject to individual taste.

But chipped, frayed or cracked shouldn't happen. Tell them.

I've had this numerous times with the Rico Reserve classic reeds.
The company has always been very forgiving, and sent me new boxes. It's a statement to how good the reeds are (for me) that even though I find chipped reeds, I still religiously use RRC reeds!

I have a student who had one reed in the box chipped on the bark only, the reed still played very well. He contacted them on the website and they asked him to send in a picture of it, he did and they sent him a whole new box free. It probably happens in the stocking and or shipping. I can't imagine them boxing broken reeds, that's one sure way to loose customers.
When I was a student I bought a few boxes of Vandoren reeds, back in the 50s, and many of them were broken. I took them back to the store in NY and showed them. They said it was not their responsibility but because I was a good customer they replaced them anyway. ESP eddiesclarinet.com

In a previous thread about these reeds i mentioned that i had had this problem- but never with more than one (maybe two) reeds per box, but then you will also see a more recent post i made where i noted the most recent boxes i have of these don't have this problem. I thought that maybe there had previously been a problem in the packaging process, and that this had been sorted out...
Maybe this is the case and the box you have is old stock- either way, contact Rico...

I have been using these and Grand Concerts for some time and have gone through quite a few boxes. Fortunately, I have not had this problem.
