 custom clarinet?

hi-- about a month ago i lacerated my right index finder and needed nerve and tendon surgery. there's a good chance that i'll never really have full feeling on the tip of my index finger. wondering if i could have my R13 modified to help with this situation? i can't feel the hole to cover it. ( saxophone isn't a big problem, since there aren't any holes to cover--just feels sort of weird at the moment.) thanks!

Ouch!

If the situation persists, yes, it's possible to "plateau" one or several keys, ie fitting a finger plate with a pad instead of the ring. Slightly more unsightly but acoustically less obtrusive would be some guide (kind of a raised collar) along the outer curve of the RH1 ring which would help your finger find the "right" position.

Schedule a meeting with your preferred repair person, however give yourself some time to find out at what degree your condition stabilises.

I still hope you recover satisfyingly. Good luck!

I've got an ancient Selmer A clarinet with a fingerplate for RH1 which is perforated like an oboe fingerplate. I'll post a photo of it soon so you can see what alterations have to be made.

Here's a description - the RH rings and this fingerplate are mounted on a rod screw between the existing pillars, so the existing rings will have to be remounted on a hollow key barrel and linked to the C vent with a bridge. The RH1 fingerplate raises the bridge so Bb/F/alt.D can be played (there's an adjusting screw on the bridge) and the new linkage piece/key foot for RH1 stops against the upper B/F# cross key pillar (which has been filed flat). The rings for RH2 and 3 are now sprung from the lower pillar as RH1 is sprung from the top pillar.

It could certainly be done. Many years ago I modified a clarinet for a friend who one day found himself missing the top joint of his l/h ring finger. Long story, but just say it was a piece of military foolishness. It worked OK for him, and he played for many years after that.

Some years ago I acquired a 1920-ish Selmer-Paris clarinet that had been cleverly modified to accommodate what I assume was a missing tip or all of the right index finger (perhaps a WWI veteran?). It had a plateau key cup to cover the uppermost lower-joint tonehole, attached to a clever roller plate hinged from the left side which allowed the r.h. middle finger to close just the uppermost tonehole by sliding up onto the roller plate, or down to the finger's normal position to close both the first and second pad. I still have a few of those custom parts (I had 'reverted' the instrument to normal keywork and sold the instrument thereafter.) I could probably recreate something similar.

Attached are photos of the old Selmer A clarinet with the RH1 plateau. What I forgot was an extra pillar had been fitted which adds more stability to the mechanism, though this may not be necessary.
