I suppose some of you might remember a few weeks ago when I asked why the heck everybody seems to like vandorens so much. I had bought a few and they sounded horrible. Well, now I know why you all like them so much. The other day I was really bored, so I figured "what the heck, let's sand the heck out of one of the vandorens until theres practically nothing left and see what happens" (I love to experiment like this, its fun :) ). So I did, and put it on my clarinet, and blew. Lo and behold, a sound came out. and it was a good sound. a really good one. a sound unlike i've ever gotten out of a clarinet before. I played on it for a little bit, then put it away. Got the other vandoren out, did the same thing to it, and it did the same thing. The third one that I had (i think i bought 3, dont remember really...), I think my cat got ahold of. I'm quite impressed, I stuck a lavoz on after that and couldnt stand the sound I got. Same thing when I tried a mitchell lurie again. I was wrong, i was wrong, i was wrong (now is when I open my mouth and insert foot)
Just thought i'd share in my happy little story. Now maybe when I audition at the U of Iowa in exactly 3 weeks (from today), the clarinet professor won't laugh at me! yay!!

(PS - state jazz band contest is tomorrow, wish me luck!)

I'm glad you found the Vandorens so wonderful. I work on them, and I still can't stand them. I'll stick to Mitchell Lurie for now. Good luck at the jazz band contest, and with your college audition!

Ashley,

I think most of the clarinetists on earth have been pissed off with Vandoren.... TRUE these reed suck.. BUT, when you get a good one, it is a good one. It's like buffet crampon.... 90 % of the instruments are unplayable, but sometimes you find the rare one. hee hee (I am ashamed but I play Vandoren telling my teaching I'm playing Mitchell Luries, Vgot no choice.. Mitchell Lurie was my teacher's teacher)

Good luck with your jazz contest.

Hey, I got really feed up with my V12s this passed summer and experomented with GCSelects and Zondas, and Liked botha a short period of time but ths sound just wasnt' what I was looking for. I then went back to my V12s, even though I didn't really like them, every ten reeds there was that one good reed that was all worth it. About two weeks ago I got my Greg Smith mouthpiece and Vandorens are the only thing that sounds good on it. Even though I don't play the recommended 3 1/2( i play aV12 3s) Vandorens are the only reeds that work and almost everyone works with minimal work you know sanding and all that. But thats just my experience with them.
