 Herbert Couf passed today 7/08/2011

Herb Couf's passing today is a great loss to the Clarinet & Saxophone community.

Herb was the 1st. Clarinetist in the Detroit Symphony when I met him and studied with him as my first great Clarinet teacher. He opened the Royal Music Center in the Detroit area, worked with Armstrong Musical Instruments, Artley, Inc., and had Keilwerth make his unique COUF Saxophones.

Herb was a great musician, a great guy, full of really new ideas, made his own line of mouthpieces, and everything else we all needed as musicians. He was a truly unique guy and will be missed by many all over the world.

May his passing be a blessing.

Aww what a shame. I have two H Couf mouthpieces for my alto. A 3* and a 5*. The 3 works better than the 5, but maybe i'm just not using the right reed or something. The 3 is a great mouthpiece....right up there with the claude lakey that I used to have.

My setup
Leblanc Legacy Bb with grenadilla barrel and bell, B45 w/Optimum lig.

I'm sorry to hear this news. I didn't know him well, but I was a Royal Music customer when he owned the store (it's too bad it's now closed). Back in the early 70s, I bought a Couf mouthpiece for my tenor sax, and it was wonderful. When I went off to college, I used it in marching band. One day, as we were coming off the field, my sax came off the neck strap and crashed onto the concrete. Sadly, that was the end of the mouthpiece, and I was never able to find another one quite like it.

Herb Couf really accomplished a great deal during his lifetime, and he will be missed.

Sorry to hear of his passing. I studied with him while in high school in the early '60's and enjoyed him a lot. Lessons were $3.50! As I remember, if he smoked a pipe during your lesson, he was in a good mood. If he was smoking a cigar, you better have had your lesson well prepared:-)

I was never his student but friends of mine were.

We played in the Royal Oak Concert Band under him through High School. Our school music program wasn't very good, and this was our only valuable musical outlet.

So shocking and my heart goes out to his family. Mr. Couf supported our school (Clawson) and myself directly during my high school and early college days. I frequented his store (took lessons there) and played his saxes too. He not only progressed as a professional player but also helped the community area too.

I still recall him telling me that they had my lessons in the first room because I was always prepared and provided music to the store. Great guy, he will be truly missed.
