 Hissing throat and tension

Hi - I've searched this forum and I'm not sure if this particular has been mentioned or tackled. I've been playing for 10 years and passed my grade 8 a year ago with flying colours, but I have always had a problem with my throat...after a random amount of time, my throat starts to hiss (not sure if I have tensed up but I can't produce a note because of it, a gurgle - almost like my air supply is not coming through - I don't know how to explain it, but I'm wondering if anyone can help me with this or know what I mean - sometimes I can play for 4 hours, sometimes only 20 minutes...does anyone have any advice? or stories that could help me? my throat does get quite tense when playing and find it hard to relax my body.

Thank you, Jay

My first thought is that you may be mistakenly including muscles throughout your neck as you form your embouchure but upon further reflection it occurs to me to ask if you may have any problems with acid reflux. Prolonged, untreated acid reflux can cause a myriad of problems some of which mimic asthma.

For me, the only tension one should have above the belly is in the lip and cheek muscles surrounding the mouthpiece.

That said, you may want to consult a doctor.

It's hard to tell from your description, but I'm wondering if you are experiencing palatal air leak. The following might help.

Oh my goodness!!! This sounds exactly like what I have! I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing, but at least now I can work on fixing it.
Thank you so much, i really appreciate it

Jay
