 High School Clarinet Quartet Ideas

Can anyone think of some possible clarinet quartets that a group of high school clarinetists could perform...decently? They need to be appropriate for solo/ensemble competition. I'm kind of looking at 3 Bb clarinets and one bass clarinet, but I suppose 4 Bb clarinets would also be an option, although I think one person would much rather play bass, if possible.

I actually just recently wrote an arrangement (for 3 clarinets + bass) of the 2nd movement of Beethoven's Pathetique Sonata (Piano Sonata No. 8 in C minor). Not sure about whether it's competition-worthy or not, but if you would like to see it just for fun, send me an e-mail.

When I was in high school, we performed "French Suite" by Yvonne Desportes--it's kind of modern, and a lot of fun to play.

Just a few without particular order:

Smith: Suite
Böehm: Quartet in Eb
Gyulai-Gaál: Four Romantic Pieces
Dubois: Quartet
Tomasi: Quartet
Jenő Takács: Serenade (I think this is a transcription from a wind quintet)
Wilson: Paganini variations
Niehaus: Jazz Suite

I'll second the Suite for Four Equal Clarinets by Smith (T. Stewart Smith, if I remember corrrectly).

Clarinet quartets and nobody has mention the Uhl?!?

Have to admit I'm not a big fan of clarinet quartets but the Uhl and Carter are quite interesting.

Uhl: Divertimento (3 Bb's and bass)
Carter: Canonic Suite (4 Bb's)

The Uhl is a standard as far as the repertoire goes; 3 mvmts. and around 12-15 min. if memory serves me (not a good bet there!)

The Carter, 3 movements, is quite interesting from a compositional standpoint. -Each mvmt. uses a different method of counterpoint. (The 2nd is quite notable for using the 30-some bar theme, its' inversion, retrograde, and retrograde-inversion simultaneously.) May be a decent piece to teach some modern usage of canonical/contrapuntal writing for your students.

Best of luck,
-JH

You might start by seeing what the local sheet music store has on hand, to get a sense of what grade level is appropriate for your players.

If your selection needs to be appropriate for solo/ensemble competition, you should consult the list of approved pieces, if there is one. Then search YouTube for performances of pieces on the list and see what catches your fancy.

You might also ask your teacher, and your band director if he/she is a clarinetist, for ideas.

Is the combination of 2 Bbs, alto, and bass an option for your group?

Some non-transcriptions you might explore:
Carter: Canonic suite (4 Bbs)
Deportes: Ceux de village (4 Bbs)
Harvey: Fantasia (4 Bbs)
Hovhaness: Divertimento (3 Bbs & bass)
Miller: Prelude & Scherzo (4 Bbs)
Presser: Nocturne (4 Bbs or 3 Bbs & bass)

technically the Carter Canonic Suite is a transcription. Carter originally wrote it for saxophone and later transcribed it for clarinet.

Take a look at the site: www.clarinetinstitute.com for music for your clarinet quartet as well as other groupings.

I have way to many to list here, but here are some my students seem to enjoy, various difficulty levels.

Take a look at the quartets at JTown Publications. The arrangements by Jeremy Eig are excellent and you're almost certain to find a nice fit among them:

Somebody has mentioned the Uhl quartet to me before. I'm not sure if everyone in the group would be able to play it, however. I just wanted to see what other options were out there.
