Hi Maestro!

I have to say that what I saw on your channel was better than over half of the crap that's on YouTube now. You shouldn't have any problems getting into the schools that you plan on applying to. If the IP locator is correct, I live fairly close to you. Out of curiosity, who are you studying with?

Chris.

Very good effort for a Highschool student.

You show definite potential, I found the messager a little to fast despite your technique some of the articulation and runs were just blurred slightly.

Poulenc demonstrated good control of tone and better sense of line within your phrases.

Look forward to listening to rest when I get a chance.

Keep it up !!

Hi Maestro,

I listened to some of your youtube recordings and I'll try to give a little feedback.

Nice in general, I think I prefer the Hindemith the most on the whole.

One thing I notice in all the pieces, is that you have a tendency to play things too fast for your own technique, and rush a lot during the faster, harder passages.
This makes the technique sound unstable and is also often too fast for the listener to be able to comprehend what's going.

The other thing I noticed throughout the pieces is a relatively unsteady rhythm. That is something I think might be important to college professors to hear. You seem to often make erratic rhythmic gestures that don't really fit with what's happening around them (I'm afraid to say that your teacher also seems to do that on piano)
It might really be worth thinking about this and doing some work playing with a metronome, but playing 'musically' with a metronome. It sounds like the varying rhythmic stuff with your playing stems from wanting something musical. It's possible to do it more homogeneously though.

Lastly, and I don't want to step on your, or your teacher's toes, but it sounds like you might be using a reed that is slightly too soft for you. Can that be? I notice your higher notes go quite flat, and also sound unstable (wavering)
To me it sounds like you don't have enough reed strength to push against, and be able to support enough. I could be wrong, not actually being there but there might be something you can do to help that situation with material.

On that same note, make sure you are listening a lot while you play. There are quite a few notes that are off, intonation wise, and some of them are long notes that you just sit on sharp or flat, not adjusting. Listening is always at the core of good wind playing (and being a musician in general) and I really believe it's better to learn to listen as early as possible.

I only listened to a part of the Messager.

I wonder why you thought it necessary to play it so fast. What was your motivation?

There's a point at which, played too slowly or too quickly, a piece of music ceases to be music.

Lot of fingers, that's for sure! But don't use them just because you can.

B.
