Does anyone have an extensive list of 2nd clarinet audition excerpts? Thanks!

Pretrouchka's 2nd clarinet part was in the recent CSO rounds.

Daphnis and Cloe by Ravel. Almost any of the Strauss tone poems, Mendelssohn sym #3 and 4, RK Scheherazade, Shostakovich Sym #1, Sibelius sym #1, Tchaikovsky sym #5 are a few with important 2nd parts also Beethoven sym #5 and #9 as well as all of the Brahms sym. too that may be used at an audition to play along with the principal player in the finals. I would add Bartok Miraculous Mandarin and Ravel Rhapsodie Espagnol.

Two others that occurred to me were: the duet from Mendelssohn's Hebrides Overture (aka, Fingal's Cave) and Smetana's Moldau (which calls for clarinet in C). A couple of things you may already be aware of: (1) in many orchestras, the second clarinetist is also the Eb clarinetist so you may need to be able to play that as well, (2) the audition list will often contain more first parts than second.

If you Google "2nd clarinet audition" without the quotes, you will find links to some actual 2nd clarinet lists, including lists for the Grant Park Orchestra, the Boise Philharmonic, and the South Bend Symphony. If you read the story about the audition for Boston a couple of years ago, you can pick up some of the pieces they called for. Repeating the search, spelling out "second" will net you a couple of more lists.

Best regards,
jnk

Interesting question, because I don't recall ever having seen a book of "difficult orchestra passages" for second or third clarinet. First clarinet players have several choices of such books and they can be extremely useful, not just for auditions but for learning the rough passages just in case one day the conductor hands out that music without any advance warning.

Apparently the publishers haven't seen a need to help second and third clarinet players prepare that way, probably because few clarinet players go into an audition in the hope of placing second or third. But ask any second or third clarinet player who's ever been handed Stravinsky's Firebird on short notice whether it would've been nice to get a chance to practice that one in advance--!

Other than the Holst Planets, the Schoenberg Gurralieder, the Mahler symphonies, the R. Strauss operas, and the early Stravinsky ballets, what pieces have important 3rd (or higher) Bb/A/C parts?

I remember the 3rd part in Shostakovich's Festive Overture is pretty much in unison with first and second the whole way through. Mainly for the fast melody stuff, all the off beat stuff is in harmony. But apart from that, can't recall any other 3rd parts besides what you mentioned above.

Bartok Miraculous Mandarin is the most difficult 3rd part I remember playing. It's 3rd and bass but mostly 3rd. The last clarinet cadenza is with the 1st, tricky rhythms and notes and several very quick changes. ESP
