I just had a customer stop in to have her clarinet set up for the "summer", her father wanted the summer set up that their private teacher recommended.
Before I dismiss as one more money making scam started by a shop in another town, has anyone EVER had their clarinet (Bb wood Buffet) set up for summer or winter and what was done?

In summer, I use slightly thicker oil, to make up for the temperature.
Winter, on the other hand, demands rather thin lubricants.
Uhm...
We're talking bores and strokes here, right?

Never heard of it. Can they explain what it is they think they need? Maybe it's nothing in particular -- the teacher is just recommending the instrument get a tune up during the down time of summer.

On flute there may be a difference. Winters here are drier and summers more humid. Oversimplifying I guess pads tend to be fatter in summer and thinner in the winter. ie when they close they hit in the back during the summer and tend to hit in the front during the winter.

Never heard of a "summer setup". Sounds like a money maker to me.
Seriously, in summer sometimes tenons need to be eased up a bit if the tenon sockets swell due to humidity. I always caution people not to do too much, as the tenons might get too loose by next February!

I'm not a certified repairman but as all say this sure sounds like a scam.
I had to readjust my clarinets when I lived Mexico when the seasons changed, but it was minor and the climate shifts there were a beast. No rain for 7 months and then the Amazon for the rest. I see you're in PA.- not too extreme.
Unless the instrument is being played outside there shouldn't be too much difference. Heaters and air conditioning both affect the humidity levels, but most units (or at least mine) have a setting for what % is preferred. If using an in case humidifier, perhaps "turning it down" if adjustable (like the Humistat) or taking it out if there is any swelling? As for pads, I never noticed a difference on clarinet (particularly with cork pads), perhaps with flute there may be a shift. But you could hand me a summer or winter flute and it would still sound terrible in my hands anyways!
I'd follow Mr. Grabner's advice as he is as knowledgeable as anybody here.
Just out of curiosity what did the customer want done?

I'm with Tobin, ask what it is that they're looking for.
As a tech and clarinetist, the only thing I've recommended for summer is oiling and cleaning/tune up because there's a little time to get used to any new pads/corks before the season starts...Not because it's summer, but because it won't be as inconvenient.

As professionals postnig above are scratching their heads regarding what, if anything, this summer setup might mean, I can only assume such granular changes to the clarinet, if even legit, would be required even less of what seems to be the teenager whose instrument is the subject of focus here.
Best: have a discussion with the teacher who recommended this.

I kind of liked the tuna/garlic oil combination suggested in another thread. Intonation becomes rather irrelevant as no one will want to sit next to you anyhow......lol.
