If it isn't one thing or another...
(If I remember correctly, there is a dentist on this board somewhere)
Remember the wisdom tooth I had surgically extracted in January (taht I'm still having nerve issues with). I had an emergent dental visit yesterday and after taking x-rays (which they almost didn't even do that), the tooth in front of where that was has an infected root. So, my choices are pull that one too or get a root canal. They are submitting a request to Medicaid to see if they will cover a root canal if I go that root.
Since I'm still having nerve-related problems from January, I'm weary of letting them pull another tooth (who knows if those roots are in the mandibular nerve canal like the wisdom tooth, and my problems will start all over again). How will having either of these procedures done effect my playing (from nerve involvement to possibly having 1 less tooth back there)? Whichever option I do, I'm waiting until after my summer concerts are done (not that I could get an appointment before that anyway). The appointment is set for July 19th. Any info can either be posted here or e-mailed to me.

I had my wisdom teeth surgically removed in December of 2005 and I don't remember having any adverse effects from it. I had to wait X number of weeks before I could start playing again, but there were no complications from it. Talk with your oral surgeon and see what he thinks would be the best course of action. I'm sure you'll have to go in for pre-op work if the tooth is to be extracted.

30+ years back I had the tooth just in front of a molar on lower jaw removed and found it weakened my embouchure (I play double lip) for some days/weeks until the muscles had strengthened to compensate It stopped me playing for a few days but soon got back to normal.
After all these years the gap beween the remaing teeth has closed up until now there is virtually none.

A couple of years back I had an impacted molar removed from lower left and a root canal in a rh bicuspid. Apart from a week of not playing after the removal it had not affected my playing in any way. I didn't get any worse, mind you I didn't get an better either!

If the tooth has an infected root, I'm guessing that there's a crack somewhere.
If the crack goes deep into the roots, the tooth probably can't be saved. If the crack isn't too extensive, a root canal will probably work.
I'm speaking from personal experience with two teeth. I don't think you should have to wait until July 19. That tooth should be checked out ASAP.
Check around, and find a good endodontist. He/she should be able to give you some idea if the tooth can be saved or not (although it can sometimes be very hard to tell). If you can't get an appointment in the next few days, tell them you're in a lot of pain. That usually does the trick.
Root canals--especially in the part of your mouth that you're talking about--really aren't a big deal. You should be able to resume playing in a day or two.
If the tooth has to be pulled and you need an implant (I've also been there) it's a bit more complicated and a lot more expensive, but again, I don't think you'll have to stop playing for any great length of time.
It's a shame you have to go through this. Best of luck to you. Please don't put it off, and please let us know how it all turns out.

Problem taken care of.
I went back to the emergency clinic yesterday and told them that I wasn't going to suffer for the next month. They pulled the tooth and I'm on a bunch of good drugs now (Penicillan VK, as well as Vicodin and Ibuprofen as PRNs for pain).
I'm already in less pain then the infection was causing. I was nervous about nerve issues, but after the shots wore off, I had all the feeling back that I came into the surgery with. At least I got that back; too bad I still have issues from January (some tingling near my lower lip on the outside and strange feelings in certain places in side my mouth). I was told that it could take a year for all that to resolve. I'm halfway.
My rehearsal on Tuesday only requires strings, so I don't have to play again until rehearsal on Wednesday. I'll be ok to play by then, if past experience is any indicator.
Thanks guys!
