He's been playing it at a ridiculously high level since he was a teen.

Should be just another walk in the park and he won't even break a sweat.

re "Flute concerto and other works". It's not clear what you are trying to say? Do you mean he is recording these in addition to the Clarinet concerto, or was your original comment telling us about the flute concerto and you were clarifying this in your 2nd post?

Dear Board,
if you want to hear a Danish player perform the Nielsen concerto, I am playing the concerto i The Lincoln Center Festival in Alice Tully Hall the 28th of July with The Royal Danish Orchestra.
All the best

RM was supposed to perform the Copland with the Philadelphia orchestra this coming season. Anyone know they are going to get to replace him for the concerto?

I volunteered to do it, but haven't heard back yet ;)

When he was a student a EMF, age 13-17, he studied the Nielsen with me one summer at the age of 15 or 16. He learned it that summer, returned the following summer with it memorized and easily won the concerto competition, he played it fantastically. He learned it in one summer with me, took me a whole year to get it to the same point as he did that summer. Actually he played it better than I ever could by the following summer. Is anyone aware of when Ricardo Morales will drop from his status the "designee" portion of his title as Principle Clarinetist Designee of the NYPO, and become a fulltime member of the orchestra?

He played with the orchestra in the most recent subscription concerts, though, and sounded awesome, so perhaps he'll be appearing from time to time as his schedule allows.

Given the high cost of taking a Big-5 orchestra into the studio, I wonder if Da Capo will be recording concerts in an arrangement similar to the one Ondine has/had with Christoph Eschenbach and Protone appears to have with Pittsburgh. Digital recording/editing capabilities make it possible virtually to eliminate audience noise, especially if the editor has three or four takes to work with. The first release is scheduled for fall, 2012 though and the NY Phil doesn't have any Nielsen on its schedule for the coming season.

Best regards,
jnk

It is my understanding that he is under contract next season with Philly but will play with NY when he can. The following year he will become their principal but with all people in that type of situation he will probably take a year leave from Philly as to not close off his option to return to Philly if he chooses to for either professional or personal reasons. One never knows what the future holds to bear. ESP

A nice arrangement for all parties would be for The Golden Child to play principal with both orchestras when their music directors are conducting and have the assistants cover when ever possible.

Sounds like what they are doing now already.

Both orchestras have wonderful and competent assistants that could make this scenario possible.

Conductors do it so why not clarinet players?

Now we're talkin' some serious coin.

And he could then record the Mozart with the Philly Orchestra.

I doubt Philly's going to record anything till the financial part is fixed.

David, yes all bets are off until the Chapter 11 situation is resolved but I would enjoy hearing that recording.

Buster, glad you got the reference.

why would anyone leave their tenure in clarinet when jobs are so uncertain and why would anyone risk leaving something like that? can anyone explain.... no auditions just appointments.... i know the phildephia orchestra just recorganized its money issues but they should be ok as many orchestras reorganize which is normal and better than shutting down.

chapter 11 is easy,.... it chapter 7 that calls it quits! something does not add up

I cannot speak for Ricardo, as I do not know him, but there are a few answers that pertain to his situation.

-As Ed Palanker mentioned, he will probably take a leave of absence from Philadelphia for a year. This would leave the door open for him to return if he would so choose.

-Going to the N.Y. Philharmonic, I would think, would be a fairly secure move. They have had some financial trouble in the past (nothing like Philadelphia), but job security there would be a non-issue I believe.

-Many high-profile musicians are given immediate tenure when making a move. This can happen in moves from orchestra to orchestra, or transitioning from an orchestral career to one of a collegiate professor. I don't know that Ricardo will be given this, but it would be of high likelihood.

-As I know it there was an audition of sorts in N.Y. Several clarinetists were given a trial period and the job was offered to Ricardo, which he did not accept at the time. This occurred several months ago, but it seems the door was left open in N.Y. and he decided has now to accept.

-Regardless of what happens in any given situation, Ricardo will be fine. Due to his stature and abilities I would be sure he turns down far more work than he could ever accept.

For the rest of us though................

Yeah, I hate doing nude auditions too....

(Principal Trumpet Boston Sym Charlie Schleuter when asked by Noston to audition for their Principal spot replied with that - and they let him audition playing in the Orchestra, and not "nude" (alone).

David,
I met Charlie Schleuter after a master-class. And while a nice guy and all, if he had done a true "nude" audition I believe the principal trumpet chair would have had an entirely different rear-end sitting on it.

but I would do a true "nude" audition for a big 5 orchestra if it got my, um, foot in the door. Hopefully the hall would not be very cold though ;-)

and I hope no offense is taken by this, but every time I see your last name it reminds me of a bad bit Letterman does on his show

A friend of mine who is a well-known local freelancer and who has a big band tells a story about the time a nudist association contacted him about playing for an association dance. They had agreed on the time, place and fee when the person from the association mentioned that the band members would be expected to perform in the nude. My friend claims he responded, "I'm sorry but we're not equipped for that."

Best regards,
jnk
