Looking for Quintet music with transposed Bassoon for Bass Clarinet
Author: Paul Aviles

Dear Boarders,

I have an urgent need for an hour's worth of Woodwind Quintet music (anything of moderate ilk will do - Show tune arrangements; top 20; light classical etc etc.), ideally with alternate transcriptions for bass clarinet to substitute for the bassoon.

Yes, I am squeamish about transposing C bass parts, so any help would be appreciated.

............thanks,

A folio titled "Ensemble repertoire for woodwind quintet", containing 11 classical pieces, provides a bass clarinet part in place of bassoon. The set (a full score is also available) is published by Rubank. You should be able to order it easily enough if your local store doesn't carry it. Not sure if it will fill up an hour, though.

Many of the titles arranged by Bill Holcomb include alternate bass clarinet parts. His arrangements also tend to be pretty accessible, both to the players and to the audience. I know that Trevor Cramer http://www.trevcomusic.com stocks many of these titles.

Paul, if you do have time to transpose and write out the bassoon parts for bass clarinet, quickest way is to drop all the bassoon parts down a 5th on the stave and change the clef to treble clef and add two sharps/subtract two flats. Anything written in tenor clef will remain in exactly the same position.

If you're sight transposing, read the bass clef as treble clef without changing the positions of the notes (altering the key signature and accidentals) and use bari sax lower register fingerings (upper register clarinet fingerings) - so bottom line E is xxx|xxo.

Or if you have Sibelius (or other notation software), write out the bassoon parts and then either transpose them up a Major 9th or copy&paste them straight into a bass clarinet (or any other Bb basso) stave.
