 Django tunes for Bb clarinet
Author: allencole

Hi Guys,

I've started doing some Gypsy Jazz, but am not anxious to keep winging it with my concert-key Django anthology. Is there any source (other than the various Real books) for Django tunes transposed to Bb?

I've managed to slog through slow ones like Django's Castle and Troubland Bolero with an A clarinet, but most of the others make me really paranoid transposing onstage. Help!

Allen,

I suppose your group consists of yourself plus a double bass and a guitar or two? Are you trying to play an exact score or are you wanting to start with melody followed by improvisation?

I can't suggest anything other than learning directly from the record, in any event. Not being a reader myself, this is the only way I could attempt to learn from his ''book'' - or any other number, for that matter.

Have you considered this method I wonder? I guess you may not get it note perfect, but it's highly likely that you'll get by more than adequately, if you have a good ear.

Incidentally, I have five LPs and a CD of Django material, but none of the numbers you mentioned are represented.

I guess I'm not much assistance here, but you have my moral support, as this genre of music has been a favourite of mine for as long as I can recall - good luck.

This is a resource that won't help with the Bb issue but there will be material that can help with playing this music by ear:

Write out the Bb transpositions? Time-consuming perhaps, but safer than winging it, and you'll be able to work out fingering issues as you go.
