Hi,
I play a Yamaha 250 and have been playing for about 15 months now.
I love the tone of this clarinet and find it suits me better than the B12 Buffet I had. I use a 6c mouthpiece with it.
Sometime in the future I would like to upgrade and treat myself to a wooden model and wondered which Yamaha model people could recommend.
I have tried a 650 and a CX and preferred the tone on the CX, but as a relative "newbie", I would appreciate any advice on the subject
For those that "started" on a Yamaha, did you upgrade and stay with that manufacturer?

If you prefer the CX, then go for that as it is a higher level instrument than the 650 so it should last you much longer.
Also look out for any used Custom Yamahas such as the CS/CSV, SE/SEV, AE/AEV as they're usually very well priced used and also the CSG which gets a lot of rave reviews.
There's no real reason to stick faithfully to the one make from their entry level instrument through to their top model as you might find something that you like better in another make - not that I'm saying there's anything wrong with Yamaha clarinets, they don't always suit everyone the same way Buffets, Selmers and Leblancs don't suit everyone.

I started with a Yamaha 26, then played on a 250, and a 34II. All of them where school instruments. When I finally decided to purchase my own clarinet, I tried several Buffets (Festival, R13, RC prestige and RC), and settled with a buffet RC, because it was the most affordable one for me at that time and because I just loved the sound of the RC. It played more in tune, had a "bigger" sound and more stable than the Yamaha clarinets that I've tried (Ideal G 950, CS, and CSVmaster). I also find that buffets have a slightly slimmer design and the keywork were more ergonomic than the Yamaha's.
I'd suggest you to try several different brands eventhough you love your Yamaha.

Definitely try a couple of different brands just to get some perspective. Since you're in the UK I would suggest making a trip to Howarth of London as they carry Buffet, Selmer, Leblanc, Yamaha, Patricola, and Amati in addition to their own line of clarinets.
Don't be afraid of used instruments either. You can often get an older pro clarinet that will play just as well as (often better than) most new professional clarinets for a fraction of the cost.
Also, did you ever get the new mouthpiece you were looking for a few weeks ago?

I started with a Yamaha 52 13 months ago and recently got a Ridenour Arioso which I like slightly better than the Yamaha. The ergonomics of the keys suit my hands better, but the plating on the G#/Ab key of the Ridenour is already worn through which is highly disappointing after only two months use.

I started with a buffet intermediate model and when the money was right upgraded to a yamaha cs model and kept it for years. It was a great instrument and I enjoyed playing. I did however wanted to try a different manufactur just to see what else was out there and stumbled upon the Amati 6series pro model. I must say I was quite pleased with this one as much as the yamaha so ended keeping it. I never really liked the buffet even when I tried several with the yamaha. point is the buffet did not work for me but
the yamaha and amati did wonders for me.

Do realise the Buffet B10, B12 and older E11 weren't made by Buffet - they were made for Buffet by Schreiber.
The new E11 is now made in the old Leblanc factory.

Hi guys,
Thanks for the great advice. I will certainly keep an open mind on the other makers out there, but now want to try a CGS
Now if I could find a secondhand one to try that would be great..................
Howarths sounds like a great idea, thanks for the tip.
Steve - I did get a B45 mouthpiece and was very pleased with it, but have gone back to the 6c again as it seems to be the best combo for me at the moment.
I did wonder how long people generally wait before upgrading to a wooden model? I hope I could do it justice as a relative newbie to playing!

It depends on the situation in my opinion. People who start playing as children generally seem to upgrade from their student instruments once they reach high school. Adult players tend to upgrade to a better instrument much quicker, maybe after a year or 2 of playing. Some people even start off with wood clarinets.
I generally think that once someone can play well enough that they can properly evaluate the playability of an instrument in terms of tone and intonation then it is a reasonable time for them to start considering an upgrade.
