In 2010, the orchestra prerecorded all of the music and was not in Radio City that night. Is the same thing happening this year? I'm sure our friend John Moses will comment if no one else.

Hi Broadway & Tony Awards fans:
A few things are different this year at the Tonys:
The music is being pre-recorded as in past years.
The Tonys band will not be at the usual Radio City Music Hall site, as the Awards have been moved to the Beacon Theater on Broadway in NYC.
The pre-records are being done at various studios around the city.
A few "live" musicians will be seen on stage at the Awards ceremony, but they also were pre-recorded (the usual "lip-sync" will be in full bloom!).
There will be a live band, but they won't be performing from the Beacon Theater.
So, there you have it! Live music at its finest, maybe next year?

Tony Awards -- is Mr. Pay the chief judge? 
Seriously: I feel it's unfortunate that canned music is being used at what should be a celebration of the best in live performance. Not having even a live rhythm section cheapens the entire event. I could see using canned music at the Oscars or perhaps the Grammies. But the Tonys? That's just wrong.

The Awards music that we hear on Sunday night is pre-recorded not "canned" music. The music you generally hear on TV is canned music, this is a bit different in that some is pre-recorded and some is played "live" from a studio in NYC and "piped-in" to the Beacon Theater when it's needed. The "live" performers you do see on stage have pre-recorded their music and then "sync" with the music that have already recorded. That is so there are no last minute glitches and everything runs smoothly for the producers of this huge event.
All the pre-records are paid at a very high rate and carefully monitored by the Local 802 Union AFM. This has been the case for many years for TV broadcasts here in NYC.
Live music is alive in NYC, and can be heard at many venues throughout the city. On Broadway we have over a dozen shows currently running, and off-Broadway even more. There are still quite a few great Jazz clubs around town, and Lincoln Center features 4 live orchestras, performing almost daily, to choose from. The Village, Soho, Chelsea, Brooklyn & elsewhere, offer any kind of live music you might want to hear live; from contemporary classical to hip-hop.
Support live music wherever you are, become active and show your support by your actions and participation.

Thanks, John, for sharing your knowledge of the NYC music scene. There is nothing like a Broadway musical. I do a lot of community/semi-pro theater pit work and to listen to the quality that comes out of the Broadway pits is just great. And to think you do that up to 8 times a week, each time with perfection is amazing. Even after YEARS of of the same show. I know WICKED has played since 2003. AND there are still a handful of the opening night orchestra members at PHANTOM who still play it, after 23 years.
Many of the best musicians in the world play in the anonymous world of Broadway and for those of us who realize the talent it takes to do that, we say THANK YOU.

The musicians for last year's Tonys were ensconced at now-vanished Clinton Recording Studios and connected via fiberoptic cable to the goings-on at Radio City. I imagine a similar arrangement will obtain this year too.
I haven't seen the pit for John's show Wicked, but I've seen a number of Broadway pits, and frequently part or all of the orchestra is almost as remote from the stage as this year's Tony orchestra will be: watching the conductor on a little bitty TV monitor, getting a musical balance thru headphones, and playing into a microphone which feeds into the house PA mix. In a lot of these shows, unfortunately, if an audience member actually hears an un-electrified note, it's an accident.
Actually, I think obscuring the role of the orchestra, hiding the band backstage or UNDER the stage in some of these shows is a conscious strategy on the part of producers. They don't want you to know there are live people playing the music for you, because they want the live people GONE.
Contrast that with the recent Lincoln Center production of South Pacific, in which the orchestra was treated as a feature, not a bug, and was revealed to the audience in dramatic fashion, in formal attire, and always got a happy, surprised ovation from the audience.
That's why the link John posted is so important. I'd ask everyone who thinks musicians deserve respect and gainful employment to visit the link & post about it on your FB page or whatever social networking site you use.

Let me get this straight.....all music is "pre-recorded", the on-stage Tony band is "pre-recorded" and lip syncing for effect, and a "live" band at a remote location??? For what purpose is the remote band if everything is pre-recorded and being lip synced by the show band for TV?? Seems a lot complicated to me..........

The Tony Awards are on TV tonight, so enjoy the shows that will all be seen. Many of the actors, singers & dancers will be performing "live", most of the music was pre-recorded, but still sounds great because it was played by some of the greatest musicians anywhere!
With all the posts on the great BBoard, we should all just sit back tonight and enjoy America's gift to the world...the Great American Musicals!

William, I believe there's incidental music, and playing the winners on and offstage when they get their awards, all of which which is live (especially if it's a musical, where the on/off music is usually something FROM the musical). I suppose if there's an overture and a live theme opening, as well as a closing medley, that'll be done live too. (I'll be watching tonight for the first time, so I'm just guessing at this point.)
I suppose you could do the whole thing with a stack of prerecorded cd's, but for the time being there's still a great theatre tradition of shows and music done live, (even though in this case live from a remote location)...though as I suggest above, the B'way producers are doing their best to banish live music altogether.
I'm told that the music director for the Tonys, Elliott Lawrence, who's been with the Tonys from the beginning, is the one who insists on live music. Of course he's getting on, so....who knows what the future holds.

Here's the clarifacation we need on the pre-records and "live" music at last night's Tony Awards:
"Eddie Salkin, a little clarification: we (the Tony Orchestra) had 32 live cues, along with all of the music we pre-recorded, and we played from a TV studio on W 26th St. Not as ideal as when we were on-site, but not as dire a picture as some are painting."
