 leblanc pete fountain model
Author: charles

I am a admirer of pete fountain and have been trying to copy his tone for years without great success. I play on a Buffet R13 which is fine on classical music although the upper register sounds thin.Is it a characteristic of the Buffet R13 or is it me? I use a Mitchell Lurie mouthpiece and Vandoren reeds 31/2. Is the Pete fountain Leblanc clarinet what it claims to be.(fat tone)?

Hi Charles,
I haven't experienced the Fountain clarinet personally, But the stats on it from LeBlanc indicate that the bore is larger and that seems to equate to a "fatter" sound.

Isn't it odd how you can hear that the bore is fatter? It's not only that, but a clarinet's tone in general really sounds cylindrical to me, especially in the chalumeau register where it's not overblown.

Because of being a Pete Fountain fan, I bought a 1611
Pete Fountain model last fall, and it's true about the
"fatter" sound. This is probably due to the larger bore, but
also to the larger outside diameter also. It is very noticably
larger that my other clarinets. The wall thickness may also be greater. I like it.

Donn ,suer like to know more about your Fountain. Is it difficult to play as a result of the larger diameter and does it take more or less air? What is the cost and where did you purchase it Por favor

One of my students (who happens to be Pete Fountain's granddaughter) plays a Pete Fountain model that her grandfather gave her. I played it against my Buffet R-13, and it does have that "fat" sound that I like for jazz, but I'll take my R-13 over it for classical music. (but that's just a matter of personal preference.) However, it is a really nice clarinet!

Hi MDI: I bought my 1610 Pete horn from WW&BW last fall for $1845. I got the nickel plate one because silver wears and tarnishes. The horn doesn't take any more air than my
old one, and it is a pleasure to play. WW&BW will let you try
out their horns. The retail is $3400.

I believe he has a special crystal mpce. I purchased a Vandoren A3 which was close to his at the time. Spoke to Allan Vache once and he told me he (al) himself used a crystal mpce that was between ab A2 an A3 and that the mpce had been refaced. I don't know how they reface glass.
