Ok, I just wanted to clarify that I have some information correct. The more "open" or higher number a mp = the softer the reed? The longer the facing = the harder the reed? So if something is around 1.15 and a ML facing, what kind of reed works best there? Thanks,

You are correct about reed strength vs. tip opening and facing length. 1.15 is fairly open so I'd probably try a 2.5 reed to start.

Your general statements are correct, but (a) there are more parameters involved inside the mouthpiece that can affect the mouthpiece's resistance and consequently the ideal strength to use on it, and (b) there are differences among players in their expectations of what the ideal reed should feel like. So it isn't really possible to give you any specific answer if you're looking for something like "a Vandoren V12 #3 will work well on that facing."
If you want a starting point at which to begin experimenting, a V12 #3 might be a good place, but it may well not be the brand or strength you play best on with that particular mouthpiece.

On a 1.15 tip opening? Who?

Thanks,
I am torn on a few things. I am either wanting a M30D or a black crystal (similar specs I think) as I have heard some players on them that sound great. I have a Vytas Krass that is more closed, but sounds so "edgy" and wild. Wanting a warm, flexible, easy to articulate mp. Wondering if a black crystal medium (112 ML) would work on a V12 3.5? So many number, so confusing! I think the M30/D is around 115 right?

Why not take your m/p back to Vytas and get him to make it work for you? That way you get something tailored specifically for you.

M30 is such a long facing that I'd suggest Vandoren 3 as a minimum. And 115 isn't that 'open'. The 119+ of B45, some Selmer and various jazzers is 'open'.

travelingclarinetist,
If you purchased this mouthpiece directly from me and it still has the original facing (has not been adjusted by someone else) you can send it back to me for adjustment to your preferences.
I adjust the mouthpiece once at no extra charge if received back together with a return prepaid mailing label.
