Hi.
I just got back from Uni. of Georgia's JanFest. Has anyone ever heard of the Tara Winds???? They are SOOO awesome. It's amazing how good the people who have played at Carnegie sound...I wish I sounded like that. Oh and by the by, did any of you know that carpal *sp?* tunnel is actually preventable? Newayz, there basically is no purpose for this post...just a little info.
Lotsa Love,

re: carpal tunnel, etc
check out Deborah de Graaff's neckstrap-gizmo message - posted about two weeks ago.
(many people may not have seen it - it was approx reply 20 on the end of a thread which had already "disappeared" to page 2 or 3. A search of "Graaff" would presumably find it.)
hellishly yours, deebee *~8^)

Hi Nicole!
Did you enjoy JanFest? I'm from GA and went to JanFest my jr. and sr. years in high school. I had the opportunity to play under 2 fabulous conductors: Dale Lonis and Jerry Junkin. It was great. I loved it! Plus, I had the chance to hang out with my band friends from other high schools.
Tara Winds *is* a fabulous group! My former band director played contra clarinet with them for a few years.
Hooray for fun times and good music!

Well...
If things keep going as they are...I will have a very bad case of carpal tunnel. Fortunately, my band director's wife is a massage therapist. She massaged the tendons in my arm and showed me some stretches to do. DEFINITE improvement!!! I was surprised to learn that full blown carpal tunnel is preventable. But of course, I'm still going to buy that wrist rest...I've already got my neck strap newayz...After all, I don't want to have to stop typing and playing from the pain.
Lotsa love,
kaosAngel

Hi Nicole! The Tara Winds are wonderful. I have had band directors who were members. What band were in at JanFest? I went to a few of the concerts ( I am a music major at UGA), and they were all very good. I also helped judge clarinets for the bands on Thursday... sorry that the lines were so long!! Maybe you came in my room... Well, like Melanie posted earlier, I also went to JanFest my Jr. and Sr. years in high school (the same 2 that Melanie went, with Dale Lonis and Jerry Junkin) and had a blast. (Except when Jerry Junkin yelled at me for being 3 minutes late to rehearsal). And I happen to be one of the "band friends from other high schools" that she was talking about.. Hey Mel!! Do keep it up... these things that you do now you will still be talking about later, even when you're a sophomore in college (like me). And another word of advice... When you go to these honor bands and festivals and things that are made up of people from all over, look around you and try to get to know as many people as possible. You will see them everywhere!! Case in point, I sat next to the same girl from Newnan at both district band and all-state my 10th grade year, and saw her many places throughout high school. We wound up both coming to UGA, and now we are very close friends. But we would have never thought about that back in high school. Anyway, enough of my rambling.. I hope you enjoyed the weekend at UGA!! Go Dawgs!
Erin
P.S. Oh yeah, did you go to the Wind Symphony concert on that Friday night? How about those pyrotechnics!! We thought that the surprise special effects during the trombone piece would be a nice touch...

The FIRE???? I was out of there like lightning. It was kinda funny though that the conductor kept conducting. Unfortunately, we didn't see the end of the concert... *awww*

Yes, I also thought it was funny that Dr. Culvahouse kept conducting... I was playing in that group ( I was the first clarinet on the second row...). We did finish the concert after about a 20-30 minute delay... you guys should have stayed. It was very good, and they disconnected the set of lights that had caught fire. However, they couldn't turn off the fire alarm lights (those really bright sporadically blinking lights), so they just blinked for the rest of the concert. Probably the most exciting concert I'll ever have!
