 Swedging with wire crimper
Author: Rob Harold

Not earth shaking news, but I successfully swedged the slack out of the tube hinges for the lower register E and F# keys, using a wire crimper tool. Now, it would not be the tool of choice if looking for such a tool. But if the clarinet is a lowly Bundy, and you happen to have a electrical wire crimper, it might do the trick. My keys seem much improved. Here is a picture of a heavy duty example of what I used:

That's what I use for swedging tubes. Works quite well.

FWIW, with a few exceptions, the low E and F# keys don't have hinge tubes, they have hinge rods, with short holes at the ends for pivot screws.

There's been a recent discussion of swedging tools on the Yahoo Musical Instrument Technician board. http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/musical_instrument_technician/message/1200

A pro can get great results with almost any tool. Back when I was making my living as a commercial artist, I would sometimes draw a curve by tracing around the edge of a nickel, without bothering to set up a compass.

If you're not making your living at it, you'll do better with the dedicated swedging pliers http://www.musicmedic.com/catalog/products/tool-pl310.html, and the pros can benefit by using precision, specially designed equipment.
