Hi again,
I'm starting to look into purchasing a used bass clarinet for my doubling needs. I'm afraid my early searches have led mostly to confusion...
Anybody got a suggestion as to where I might find a decent instrument in good working order for $2k or less? I'm open to non-wood as long as the tone is decent and the instrument's in tune.
Thanks again for your time and help!
mary

If you don't need the extended range you can get a new Yamaha 221 II and a professional mouthpiece for that amount.

Several years ago, one of my colleagues made arrangements with The Woodwind & The Brasswind to come out to their Indiana location and try out bass clarinets; he chose the 'best' of something like 6 candidates. When you factor in travel expenses, that seem a bit extreme. But he felt it was worth the trip, and he did come home with quite a fine instrument.

I did a similar thing with purchasing an English horn for my college: they sent me to a distributor with a wide selection and I was able to try several. Undoubtedly the best way to purchase an instrument.
My problem is that my current bass clarinet skills aren't up to such a trial... yet. I doubt I would be able to tell much difference except in the ease of playing, which is a definite factor for me.
Thanks!

I doubt you'll have too much trouble finding a good used instrument for less than $2k providing you don't need a low-C model. Good used low-Eb basses seem to start at around $800-$1000. However, if you do need a low-C then finding a decent one under $2k will be difficult.

I looked at the site and it does seem a very good deal.
Thanks for the tip.
