 Tree the Cat.....AGAIN!!
Author: William

Just found out at last nights orchestra rehearsal that I may be once again called upon--in the absence of our Principal--to play "Peter & the Wolf" for our May city-wide BJSO student concerts. And, like in May of 2009, I will be chasing the cat up the tree with my rescued (from a high school back junk room) 1960's vintage Buffet R13 A and a Forestone reed on my Chicago Kaspar #14 mpc. As usual, with Forestone, I am not worried about the reed changing from warm-up to concert nor in leading up to the important solo(s). Made from a combination of bamboo fibre and synthetic material, unlike cane, it will maintain its resilence and sound allowing me to put all of my energies into playing expressively and musically. As I like to say, Forestone allows you to play the music without having to worry about playing the reed.

As the regular BJSO second clarinetist, I'm looking forward to playing Principal for this concert. Interestingly, for the 2009 concert, our Principal elected to have wisdom teeth extracted. For this upcoming P & W concert, she is "going out of town to visit an ailing relative"--an unfortunately true story. However--bottom line, once again, I get to move over and have all the fun....LOL.

William, I lived in Madison for 7 years in the 90's and used enjoy the Concerts on the Square. Does your orchestra ever do those?

Ken--BJSO is "Beloit/Janesville Symphony Orchesta".

Pastor--Sorry to say, no. The Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra (for which I occassionally sub) is the Concert on the Square group. Our BJSO is located in Rock county, south of Dane, about 50 miles south of the Capitol Square and gives all of its concerts in either Beloit or Janesville (even tho about half the membership comes from the Madison area). All of us are contracted seasonally on a per service pay basis and are considered to be a fine regional semi professional group.

William, when I practiced soon after I read your message, I couldn't resist meowing at Jane Feline with a B-flat clarinet just to see what she'd do. She likes the clarinet a lot, but the meowing -- hmmm. I was practicing sitting down. She jumped into my lap and balanced herself and craned forward so she could bite my fingers and paw at them and pull at them with her teeth. But she didn't deploy the grappling hooks -- well, she didn't deploy them very much -- nor did she bite hard enough to draw blood, so....
