I live in Holland and play on a Wurlitzer reformed Boehm system as do a lot of other people here. I have the possibility to purchase a basset extension for my A clarinet so that I can play the original manuscript version of the Mozart Concerto which goes down to a low C. My question is: where can I find the original notation ?

To expand on Mark's reply somewhat: The original concerto was written for Basset Clarinet, that is, a clarinet in A capable of playing down to written C. Since there were very few of these around, Mozart wrote an arrangement for normal A clarinet, on which the lowest note is written E. The Basset Clarinet manuscript was lost without any copies while the other survived.
In the 20th century, a reconstruction of the concerto for Basset Clarinet was created, based on some educated guess work and a fragment of the work written for a Basset Horn/Clarinet in G. This fragment is known as the Winterthur fragment.

I don't think there's any proof that Mozart was the author of the "normal A clarinet" version of the Clarinet Concerto. In fact, once you recognize where the low notes should be, the "given" version really looks clumsy, with simple octave transpositions rather than the skillful alternatives that Mozart would have written.
As to extending your Reform Boehm A clarinet to written low C, a good bet would be Steve Fox, who is an excellent craftsman and advertises that he does this. His e-mail address is 104022.3105@compuserve.com, and his web site is at http://www.sfoxclarinets.com/. He's out of town until February, though.
Best regards.

Thanks for your info. I know of the Winterthur fragment and actually, when I was studying with George Pieterson I got a photo copy of a manuscript of portions of the first movement. The address on the copy was the city library of Winterthur in Switzerland. So I called them, but they have only the first movement since the rest is lost. But the reconstruction that you mentioned sounds interesting if I do get the extension. Do you know where I could get that?
Thanks again....I'm new to this site and it's really amazing.
