Good news! Clark W. Fobes is coming to NYC!
Author: John J. Moses
Date:   2011-03-22 20:26

Hi All:

Here's an email from Clark, he's bringing his new best stuff to NYC next week, so call him to set up a time to try his goodies!

"I will be available at the Wellington Hotel on 7th Ave in NYC, on Tuesday Thursday and I am trying to keep the appointments in the morning as much as possible. You can call my cell phone number (415) 596-5595 and or try my e-mail: clark@clarkwfobes.com

I hope to be bringing some of my new hard rubber lined barrels and I am definitely bringing reeds for sale."

Let's all try to drop by to say hi, Clark's a great guy.

Be well, cheers!

A song for the visit of Clark Fobes
Author: David Spiegelthal 2017

[Sung to the tune of "Santa Claus is Coming to Town]:

"You better come out
Your reed must not dry,
Better not pout
I'm telling you why
Ole Clark Fobes is coming to town!

He's making mouthpieces
He's checking them twice,
Gonna make even beginners sound nice;
Ole Clark Fobes is coming to town!

He hears you when you're squeaking
He knows if you're a fake
He knows if you play bad or good
So play good for goodness sake!"

etc. [grin]

Nice work, David!

Wish I could come out to NYC.

DS,

It looks to me that GBK is going to have to respond to your excellent little ditty. I can't top yours so I yield to him.

Good show.

I don't want to hijack this good news thread, but David, I hope you're doing some song-writing "for real." You've got a way with lyrics. (Thinking about that right now because I'm working on the last draft of an article about a horror movie theme that's inspired several musicals. In some of them, the lyrics serve the music about as well as squeaks on a cracked reed.)

Very good David...looks like a whole new career!

Actually, Clark is bringing all his best stuff the the Wellington in NYC next week.

For those of you who can be there, enjoy:
His great Bb, Eb and Bass Fobes Mouthpieces
His Eb Fobes extensions
His new batch of Fobes reeds
His new lined Fobes barrels & regular ones
Plus much more, great stuff.

We have a few very accessible Clarinet accessory makers that we can meet, discuss & try their equipment, Clark Fobes is one of those fine individuals!

Make it a point to meet the man, try his stuff, and enjoy NYC.

Cheers,

JJM

Sung to the tune of "White Christmas"
(with apologies to Irving Berlin)

I'm dreaming of a Fobes mouthpiece
Just like the ones from long ago
Where the throat tones glisten, and people listen
To hear notes that smoothly flow

I'm dreaming of a Fobes barrel
With every exercise I play
May your tuning be perfect, not stray
And your sound be heard from far away

And here's GBK, who can also write smoother lyrics than some of the fiddaddle from fad-addled young pros. Maybe Hollyweird should start hiring clarinet players to write lyrics that scan without torturing the syllable breaks....

I look forward to reading about Clark Fobes's visit to New York. He's famous for quality and for quality control.

I had many friends who booked flights to see Clark in London a few years back during at small clarinet festival only for him to cancel on no notice claiming he had 'lost his passport'.

Fingers crossed he remembers to get on the plane this time.

My group was scheduled to perform at Clarinetfest last year, but we had to pull out due to schedule clashes (northern hemisphere summer is, of course, our winter so clarinetfest falls right over the concert season).
We canceled with heaps of notice (before the booklets went to print), but a week AFTER clarinetfest i noticed that my passport had expired earlier that year! If we HAD gone, there was a chance i might not have noticed until i went to the airport, which would have been a big disaster.
These kind of things can happen (luckily not to me, this time!)

Booking flights, trains, hotels etc in the hope of being able to work with a craftsman is an expensive exercise and one that if cancelled at the last minute (literally the day the event was begin) can casue the potential customer to be out of pocket for no good reason.

Illness, family issues etc are all understandable. Misplacing your passport, when you have an international trip ahead, is just lazy in my mind.

I would reinterate, if you are planning on visiting New York to see this maker, make no plans until you speak to him to confirm he actually got on a plane and has arrivedi n New York.

I believe the saying is 'once bitten, twice shy'

I have always known Clark to be a completely upstanding and honest guy. He is not only one of the best ww craftsmen out there, but one of the really good people in the business. He has come to NY regularly for a few years now.

Perhaps you might might want to contact Clark directly if you have complaints or questions.
