 Question on Musikmesse
Author: Franklin Liao
Date:   2011-03-20 15:55

I have been thinking of visiting Musikmesse since I have to be in Germany for the Hannover Messe, the industrial fair. Can I get a bit of a low-down on the fair itself and what can be expected for the layperson that's interested to visit? Is it a more sourcing oriented nature and not geared towards the general consumer?

I have been there twice. All I can say is every professional musician should be there a few times in their life.

The exibition is 4 day long, but you have to visit the last one, because you can buy only the last day. Entering fee is low, it usually opens at 10 am. and closes at 6pm as I remember.

Most exhibitors are there looking for dealers. Most will be nice and don't mind if you are not really a dealer. Some are probably interested in teachers etc. learning more about their instruments for more advertisement. The first three days are trade-only and the last day is open for everyone so is the most crowded. It is generally not allowed to buy or sell any instruments there but some do that anyway... You can basically walk around and try pretty much every instrument you want so get a chance to play instrument you otherwise might never be able to.

Thank you. Can I assume, base on my experience with Hannover, that the first and the last (public) day are to be avoided, and that photography is not allowed but people would still be taking photos everywhere anyways... and that some companies will try to sell their samples on-site to avoid lugging them back to whence they came from?

That out of the way, are visitors allowed to bring in their own mpcs? I imagine that visitors are not to bring their own instruments into the fair ground, if my own experience of Hannover can be extended to this fair as well.

You can bring in your own instruments and accessories after they are approved and you filled a blank.

I will be attending the Messe this year and if yo show up you will get a chance to play the New Moba and Backun clarinets and any of the other great Backun accessories . Trust me that is worth a plane ticket to Germany!

On the Musikmesse website, it says that visitors are not allowed to bring their own instruments into the messe. I don't know what that means for mouthpieces and such.

I hoping to go, although I am a little unsure about exactly when I am allowed to go. Does anyone know if I would be allowed to go before the 9th, or if only the 9th is allowed for the general public.

Thanks
Sacha

Franklin, pretty much everything you said is correct, except only the last day is public, the first three are trade-only.

As far as instruments and mouthpieces, I've seen only a few bring in instruments. I don't think they filled anything but I don't know. Mouthpieces are generally no problem, almost everyone brings in a small bag with some stuff... like mouthpieces.

Srattle, players and other people who aren't considered "trade" (e.g. dealers, repairers, etc.) are not supposed to come in the first three days... but you can buy a ticket online in advance and I serisouly doubt anyone is going to even bother asking you anything. Even if they do, they won't check on you in their "secret computer"...

Looks like I will take a train ride to Frankfurt then. Kind of hard to say no when one is already going to be halfway across the globe... I am sold, just from checking the list of those that would be present at hall 1.

By the way, how formal are the exhibitors? I trust that the the reps would be more laid back than those of Siemens AG, Vestas and ABB at Laatzen.

Not sure what you mean by formal. Some exhibitors (especially Chinese and Taiwanese ones) tend to ask if you have a business card. By far most are very nice. BTW you probably know since you've been an exhibition but... wear comfortable shoes!
