 Clarinet examples for kid talk
Author: davetrow

I'm an intermediate player that will be giving a very brief talk on the clarinet to a small group of children. I'd like to play short excerpts for them that illustrate the characteristic sound of each register, as I intend to talk about the clarinet as being "three instruments in one."

Two questions:

1) What excerpt(s) would you suggest for each register that would be accessible to pre-adolescents?
2) How can I get hold of them without laying out a lot of money?

Play things you already know, for example:

Chalumeau: Peter and the Wolf, introduction of the cat.

Clarion: Mozart Concerto, initial solo entrance

Altissimo: The Reveille bugle call , an octave up from http://bands.army.mil/music/bugle/reveille.asp.

Find out what the most popular video-type game for their generation is and play the theme music.

I had done a recent demo for 5th graders to inspire them to do band. I played the Harry Potter Theme Song (Hedwig's Theme) and they all loved it. You could play it in two octaves to achieve the altissimo and lowborane tone you are looking for. Hope I helped!

Peter and the Wolf is definitely the right one for the chalumeau--I found a Russian score online and can play the second statement of the theme as written, or transpose the whole thing.

And Harry Potter is a great idea! I found it online, even! I'll transpose it to the clarion register.

As for the altissimo, Reveille would be OK, but I'd like something that plays up the "squeaky" aspect of that register, and would still be familiar to the kids. Any other ideas?

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "squeaky," but you might consider a tune written for fife or Pennywhistle.

Cool idea, Susan! I happen to have a couple of instruction books on the penny whistle--I'll take a look.

"Squeaky" is mostly a comment on my current level of accomplishment in the altissimo.
