 Al Genovese

The great oboist Al Genovese has died. He was the long-time principal of the Boston Symphony. His obituary, of notable interest to all wind players, is at http://www.boston.com/bostonglobe/obituaries/articles/2011/03/16/alfred_genovese_79_brought_sweetness_of_tone_to_the_oboe/?page=full.

In particular, he followed Marcel Tabuteau's advice to make sweetness of tone the first priority. You find a sweet tone on a note in the middle register and carry it to the high and low ends. Also, you should sing your lines like a great vocalist and think of each performance anew, never doing it by rote.

I have several CDs from Boston Records http://www.bostonrecords.com/ documenting his exquisite playing.

I had the good fortune of hearing him play live many tmes. I can't imagine finer playing than that in the Mozart Grand Partita recorded by the Marlboro Alumni. A great loss!
