Performance Feedback

Hello Everyone,

I recently finished my first doctoral recital at the University of Miami Frost School of Music. I have put the video up on YouTube and was hoping to get some feedback from the clarinet world at large. There were some mistakes here and there. Anything constructive would be much appreciated. There are 6 videos in total.

I could go for more conviction in Carnival of Venice, and more continuity. You have the chops, no problem, but I feel like you're more concerned with the perfection of the notes than with linking it together as a whole piece of music. Each section feels like an independent sprint. Mannerisms between sections / during rests are something we don't often pay that much heed to, but they can be a big tell into your approach and your inner monologue. You have a very calm, focused, "job well done, notes properly played, now to the next part" look (at least, as much as I can tell through YouTube), which could be appropriate for some pieces, but not so much for a carnival.

I'm not suggesting to go all Andre Rieu on it, but some sort of indication that you just played something carnivally rather than highly-technical-and-proficient might get you some significant mileage. And rather than faking it with some after-the-fact theatrics, try getting yourself into some sort of zone as you start each section that makes such mannerisms the only possible outcome.

Extra oomph on the downbeats would help with that. Your accompanist could contribute more in this regard, as his part came off to me as aging-dusty-carousel rather than vibrant carnival. Which is also a perfectly valid way to play the piece, if you both come to a musical consensus on it.
