 Audition pieces?
Author: BassClarinetBaby

I am auditioning for university (a bachelor of music/bachelor education) in September this year. For my one of my auditions I need 2 contrasting pieces, while for the other I need 3 pieces. I would like to play the 2nd movement from Mozart's Clarinet Concerto as one of them.

I was thinking about playing Prelude from the Five Bagatelles by Finzi (it's around level 6) or Canzonetta by Pierne (grade 7).

Opinions and suggestions for a third piece please? Also, what exactly is the grade level of the Mozart piece?

Never Bb, sometimes B#, and always B natural! ♫♪

THe Mozart is the highest level- it is in a level of its own.

Mozart is like a clear glass - any smudge shows up very easily.

If you have really solid technique for legato playing, and can play in the correct stylistic manner for it, them it's not a big deal. However, if you can't - it will be painful.

How about the JeanJean Arabesques?

You should definitely check what the minimum level pieces you are required to play for your auditions, I don't know about Australia's examining boards (seeing that the OP is in Australia) but the Finzi Prelude from Five Bagatelles is only a Level 6 Royal Conservatory of Music, and most programs here request minimum Level 8 for non-performance majors. But we have 7 available levels for clarinet, out of a theoretical 11 (the odd numbers are skipped except for Level 1 and Level 9, which do exist for piano, guitar, and bowed strings) The Fughetta (with the Forlana from the same piece is Level 9 here) however, is the right level.

If you're going for the Queensland Con, I think you need grade 6 AMEB minimum...
