 Morgan Mouthpieces...
Author: Heather

It seems that everyone I talk to around here (my director, my teacher, my friends) all love Morgan mouthpieces. My director loaned me his about a month ago. I didn't like it much at first but now I love it! It makes me sound so much better! I'm curious to why I haven't heard much about them on this board! What are your likes or dislikes about them? Also... where can I find a Morgan for a decent price? Thanks! :o)

International Music has them for 87.50 USD; I'm sure the other mailorder places are similar. I consider that reasonable ...

I'm interested in getting one too, or at least trying one. The WW&BW lists them for $103. That's a big difference from Int'l Music. Are there different models? (not tip openings, like M06, M08, etc.) :o)

I bought a Morgan at a big Tokyo shop. There was a not written by Morgan himself.
Morgan insists almost all commertially available mouthpieces' tables are not hand-fhinished very flat:after thermal process of hard rubber.I agree with this opinion, since after buying mouthpieces I test their flatnesses and found a little deformation.

But the Morgan I had was not for me for two reasons.
1)Mouthpiece tip shape was too round and did not exactly fit the shape of reed tip shapes.
2)The upper profile enabled me(very small mouth man) to hold the lower position of the reed and made reed vibrate more easily. But sometimes squeaks occured.I guessed that was caused by the different pressure balance with those for ordinary profile mouthpieces.
3)Although quite easy to sound,I did not feel its sound deep enough.

Mark:

The high 80s to very low 100s price range in USD I believe is fairly reasonable for a very good new pro-grade mp. At least it's much more reasonable than some of the hand finished Kaspar mps that are fetching several 100s on the open market today.

Heather -

Ralph Morgan makes very good mouthpieces. Like everyone who does hand finishing, he can adjust a mouthpiece to play best on your instrument and with your particular embouchure. Therefore, you will get something better if you go to him. He is at all the workshops and will gladly make a mouthpiece for you on the spot. If you already have a Morgan, I think he will customize it for you. He also makes barrels, which can be a big improvement over what came with your clarinet.

His mouthpieces are not for everyone. The "duck's beak" shape means that your jaw is more closed than with the standard shape. I played one for about two years and liked the response very much, but I ended up preferring the sound I got when my jaw was more open.

He's also a great character. He's been around for a long time and knows everybody and is full of funny stories. It's worth seeking him out just for that. Ask him about the Selmer 10G and the workshop he set up to do the finishing work on them.

Best regards.

Ken Shaw
