I usually soak my reeds in water before and after i play. Lately I've been noticing some mildew on them. Do you guys have anything you use the help keep reeds from getting mildew.

Are you keeping them sealed in a plastic bag between uses?

Scrub them with an old toothbrush and a little bit of toothpaste.

Make sure that the reed is wiped off well after playing (soaking it).

A good wipe on the pants helps.

Mildew's a problem here in Virginia. I never leave a reed on a mouthpiece after playing. I take the reed off, rinse both reed and mouthpiece and blot them dry, then store them separately where air can get to them. Instead of storing reeds in a closed reed case, I use those cheap little black plastic Vito holders that take four reeds. Reeds dry out pretty quickly in those cases, with the bases exposed to air and the tips well-protected from getting banged up.

Don't soak them before you put them away. I keep my reeds in a plastic bag with a Rico Vitalizer #58 in the air tight bag. I never have mold on my reeds, I never soak them either for more than just a few seconds, and only the vamp part at that. You can read my reed pages on my website to learn more and why I do that.
