 how much for gold plating?
Author: Clarimeister

Hey there fellow clarinetists. Just a quick question if anyone has ever had this done. How much (average) would a jeweler charge to gold plate a bonade ligature? Somewhere round $50 maybe? Thanks!

Does Muncy still sell them pre-plated.

According to Muncy's site, the plating options for Bonade ligatures are nickel and silver. No gold anymore.

Why plate a ligature ? It makes no difference whatsoever. You can buy a perfectly good ligature for much less than $50.

Plating makes it shiny.

David - I remember Muncy selling them pre-plated but I already own a Bonade standard, and as far as I know they only sell in nickel and silver now. As for the rest of the repliers - not to sound mean or anything, but I never asked for an opinion on why I want to plate my ligature. I specifically asked just for an approximation in price. Though you guys may disagree, I find that the material on a ligature (plating included) makes a slight but noticeable difference in how it the sound rings, and the gold plating will damper the ringing down a tad for my liking, since I tried my instructor's gold plated bonade and loved it.

I had plating done through Woodwind and Brasswind and I think Muncy is sympathetic to the cause as well. I can't remember the price now for each but I think it was under $50. I was trying to match my horn as well, so there are some other considerations.

Think also of Bay who offers all his ligatures in both...... some really fancy looking stuff on his website !!!

Bay still makes gold plated ligatures. BG also does.

My understanding is that Muncy and others stopped having them plated because the cost of gold had gone up substantially. I got mine for 50 when they had them in stock.

I've heard of people getting them plated from Jewelers with varying degrees of success.

Bennett thank you very much. That was exactly something I was looking for. I imagine it'll be about 50 or less. Just kinda wanted to get an idea. Thanks again. Paul, and NBeaty. I was looking everywhere for a gold plated bonade off those sites. If they would have had one, I would of totally gotten it. Unfortunately, I think they both stopped selling gold plated bonades. Thanks for the help though guys!

I'd recommend having several done at once, as the plating does wear off over time.

Could you just get it replated after it wears off substantially? Just curious. Thanks!

I'm sure you could get it replated. If you have the funds, just get a few done at once and you won't have to worry about it for a long time.

FYI: My gold plated bonade inverted plating wore off after about 2 years. It's still very functional, but the gold part of it is essentially gone.

They are also pretty popular, so selling them would be easy if you ever didn't want\need the extras.

I'd commission one made of titanium. This fellow could make it, though if you need to ask the price . . . . http://www.landellflutes.com/gallery/innovations/

I don't know how Bay ligatures are made now, but my Bay gold plated ligature (which luckily someone just gave me, didn't buy it) was by far the worst made metal ligature I've seen. Breath on it and it would break.

If you go for the thicker plating that Artisan offer the longer it will last & will be cheaper in the long run than going for the thin coating on a number of ligs.

I had a Bonade gold plated at a local auto dealer. In order to get it done, they had to list it as an accessory on my Mazda.

I took a Bonade and a vandoren master to a jeweler, who charged me $40 for the two.
I also have one that was plated in palladium-my brother works for Palladium so I figured Id give it a try- all of my Bonades stink-now I use a Gigliotti.
