 In praise of the "Equalizer"

Anyone have one of these plastic Bay student mouthpieces, the "Equalizer"? I'm not ashamed (but perhaps should be) to admit this is damn near my favorite mouthpiece! I've been playing it for about 2 years now. Intonation: fab. Tone: better than fab. Flexibility: total. I own a lot of clarinet mpcs. costing from $7 to $250. This is one of the best. I did try a "real" Bay, circa 1970s "Kaspar copy" (was everything Bay made then a "Kaspar copy?"), that wasn't nearly as nice as my "Equalizer."

A happy consumer.

Cheap and reproducible, if it works why worry?

I spoke with Wolf "Tayne" Tannenbaum of Bari associates last week, who has similar observations. If he used rare earth magnets and secret sauce he would probably sell more stuff.

The biggest names are not necessarily the best players. Kenny G, anyone?

The vagaries of matching a mouthpiece to your schnoz, reed and playing style or so immediately complicated that having cheaper choices seems sensible.

I have such a bright, forward tone that most every Plastic mpc has been strident as I play. Mebbe I'll check this one out.

You go, man.
