I know there are a few (maybe many) out there who shudder at the sound of jaz but I received a new Eddie Daniels CD for Xmas - "Swing Low Sweet Clarinet". Has anyone heard his rendition of "Sing, Sing, Sing"? The last few measures of this tune are awesome (IMHO). If I could play just that last passage or so like he does, I would feel that I had accomplished all that I set out to do on the clarinet (maybe I'm easily impressed and most of you would say, "No hill for a climber." .................just wish I could do that well. I really like it better than Benny G's recording - call it blasphemy if you like.

What gave you the impression there weren't, Jerry? There are lots and lots of us Jazz fans out here. We love to listen, hum along, sing along, play along or just be, like you - awed by our favorite artist and aspire to play like that someday. You know -- We don't care what Momma don't 'llow....

I will love hearing [when I find the CD] how Eddie [I'm a fan of his!] will play Sing x 3, since I have been singing-along to Benny's for years, a definitive performance, hope it will be included in "JAZZ" on PBS. Hopefully we are all improving in clarinetistry, maybe even beyond the King of Swing. Don

This comment was meant only for those who don't like jazz - I know there are plenty of you out there who do. I've been disappointed with the Burns jazz series. Don't know what I was expecting and I guess the socialogical aspects are very much a part of the history of jazz but..........
I did get a new teacher today (staring next Sat.). He teaches at the college in Commerce, TX - used to be East Texas State, not sure what it is called now. Prior to that he played with the USMC band and was an instructor for USMC band school. He just might be the disciplinarian I need - we'll see how it goes.
Listen to Eddie Daniel's "Sing, Sing, Sing" if you get the chance.

Eddie also released an direct homage to Benny Goodman with Gary Burton on GRP. It was pretty stale. GRD-9665 covered Singx3 as well..
The newer stuff on Shanachie steps out a little more and puts some more risk in the disc.
I also have a copy of ED's Reference Recordings (RR-40CD) from 1991 recorded at the Troy Savings bank music hall. On this record, you can really tell how solid a musician he is along with his strengths as a performer.
It's not heresy or blasphemy to revisit great music. It takes great musicians to find fresh ways around a classic tune.

I'll have to give that CD a good listen. I have several CDs and vinyl LPs with Sing, Sing, Sing played by various groups including good ol' Benny G. I love this piece. The srory I've been told is that is the first jazz piece that was played in Carnegie(sp) Hall as it mainly for symphonic and opera stuff only. Due to the popularity of swing, some of the better swing bands were allowed to play there on occassion. Benny G noticed the crowd wasn't as lively as he was used to so he cut loose with a new piece they were working up called Sing, Sing, Sing.
