5RV vs. 5RV Lyre

Hi,

New to the forum here and I'm new to the clarinet. I'm not new to playing music but I just acquired a nice little JL Hutchen Bb clarinet and I'm having a blast learning to play it. I'm in my late 40's and have been playing music most of my life - electric stringed instruments and drums. This little clarinet has opened a whole new (and wonderful) world of music to me. I've decided to purchase a decent mouthpiece for it and after a lot of online research (I'm looking for a teacher but live in a rural area) I've decided that the 5RV series mouthpiece would probably be a good replacement for the $2 plastic mouthpiece that came with the clarinet. Can someone help me understand the difference between the 5RV and the 5RV Lyre and possibly help me with a recommendation? This is a question I'd ask my teacher if I had one. :-) I just don't understand enough about the physical dimensions and characteristics of these two mouthpieces to know which one would serve me in my beginning stages and into the intermediate level. I'm working with the blue Rubank method book and even though it is not the easiest instrument I've ever tackled, I'm finding it produces the most beautiful sound of any instrument I've ever played. In my opinion there is nothing that sounds better than the lower register notes of a clarinet. I have a CD called Benny Goodman and Friends. He does a version of Send In The Clowns that will bring tears to the eyes. Good stuff! Sorry, I got off topic. :-)

Mark, it would probably be best just to check out a few of each model you are looking at and play test them to find the one that sounds best. Take along someone who knows the clarinet. Several reputable mail-order houses will allow you to try several mouthpieces at a time.

"Lyre" designation for Vandoren means "longer lay," or longer distance between the very tip and where the reed meets it. So you would take in more mouthpiece with a 5RV Lyre than a non Lyre.

The best way to find how much that is, is to continually play an open "G" while slowly taking in more and more mouthpiece. When it "SQUAWKS," you just back off that point slightly and that's YOUR ideal spot for THAT mouthpiece.

For me, the 5RV Lyre feels more open than the 5RV and is easier-blowing. But I prefer a slightly open, easy-blowing mouthpiece. YRMV.

I look for the point where the reed and the lay separate and place my lower lip so that my lower teeth are directly below the separation point.
