Daphnis and Chloe 2nd suite parts
Author: USFBassClarinet

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone knows if it is possible to get some different parts for Daphnis and Chloe. I have the part from IMSLP but find it quite hard to read during rehearsal. Any place to get individual parts or does anyone have a better part?

Thanks!

Those are actually the same parts that I have from the Orchestral Musicians CD Rom Library, which is pretty much identical to the parts that I played when I played it from the actual parts.

The original parts are on really big paper if I recall. Been about 20 years since I've performed Daphnis w/Orch.

Have you tried printing the parts from imslp on larger paper? Maybe Legal sized, or A4 sized paper?

That was the next step. The flutes seem to have really nice parts, but it being a big flute piece, I guess it is widely available for them. Will make due with blown up parts I guess.

Thanks

I just went and checked imslp to see something,

Adobe automatically size down the parts to what size paper you have in your printer. In this case, the parts on imslp are made for 10x13in paper, which would explain the "crowded" music. If you can get your hands on that sized paper, that should fixed the crowded look, and be able to print it directly from the pdf file instead of blowing up your current part. That way, it should look more normal.

I've noticed that if I scan IMSLP printouts back into PDFs, that will enlarge the print size somewhat. But for a lengthy and complex part, you'll probably do just as well to find a more powerful printer.

Kalmus publishes Clinton Nieweg's critical edition of the 2nd suite. Those new editions are cleanly printed. Nieweg doesn't change the music - only corrects mistakes in earlier editions that have (maybe) already been corrected by hand in existing copies of older parts. I don't think there would be a problem in using this corrected part, even if the rest of the orchestra has older ones. It would be easy enough to compare parts and resolve any discrepancies, which probably will involve errors in the originals that need to be corrected anyway (if, as I've suggested, they haven't been fixed already by earlier players or conductors).

Kalmus's website is a little sluggish right now, but the individual parts were listed in their 2006-7 catalog at $9.00.
