Finding myself constantly thinking about black wooden horns these days...
Had bought a Selmer CL300 at a yard sale last Summer, and taking some beginner lessons. Took the plunge into a wooden Yamaha YCL62 in the Fall, (a great move tone-wise), and playing alot of pop tunes by ear now. My niece was selling off her Buffet Festival at Christmas...and now it's at home with me! And I'm a complete noobie.
Now I'm faced with reeds, ligatures, sheet music, mouthpieces, etc, and totally enthralled with the whole culture of clarinet madness.
I guess I won't be able to blame the equipment as an excuse for poor sound, but driving the wife nuts with practice at home.
Any advice on productive learning tips other than a bunch more practice?
Thanks in advance.
Dave

On the plus side, she'll always know where you are and what you're doing.
Productive learning tips:
- find a teacher if you haven't done so
- find a community band nearby. Maybe not so much for "productive" playing but maybe for meeting others with an inclination to small-group practising.

Perfect practice makes perfect........... always LISTEN to yourself.
It's never too late to practice SLOWLY.
A steady, quick stream of air is your best friend.

Dave,
My wife feels your wife's pain. I started out ten months ago with a plastic Yamaha 20, moved up to a YCL 52, was given five old clarinets and two flutes, and just bought a new Ridenour. Fortunately my wife plays flute and is fairly tolerant of my new obsession. She would like me to lose a couple of my mountain bikes though (my other obsession).

>clarinet is an addiction! the best kind. >
Yup, and a spouse with a music addiction makes a reliable enabler! ;-) My husband plays violin. When we were still crawling our way out of starving student status, he asked me tentatively what I thought of the idea of replacing his violin instead of replacing our extremely used, junkyard-ready car. I surprised him by encouraging him to buy that violin while he had the chance. Eh -- when we first married, he was working as an auto mechanic, so I figured he could keep the rattletrap running (which he did for several more years). Still has the violin. He never complains about my buying anything related to the clarinet addiction.

Hi to all participants!
I am the beginner on this site.
Many thanks to all founders and sponsors of this site and all participants.
Already some months I read this site.
But yet to time has written nothing.
Here there are real professionals - my humble opinion here costs nothing.
I am the mad fan, once for a long time (when I was still the young man) I played one small wind band.
Now again I want to return and study a clarinet. I should study all from the very beginning level - because now even fingering am inexact I remember))
My wife is a real angel!
She never to me reproached for my hobbies even if it and is expensive.
Though I understood that in a shower she worries constantly a little - but only smiles.
This time, to buy a clarinet - I has decided not to try any more patience of my wife.
I have chosen a clarinet is very good! I hope, It will be real one of superb Clarinet for me. Buffet Festival.
with pair of good hand crafted mouthpieces and delivery cost - hardly more than 4000 dollars.
Then I took a small slice from my other hobby and have offered in favor of this clarinet.
I have sold one of my best photo lens - Canon 300/2.8 L IS - has just received that money to buy this Buffet Festival.
I have sent order payment to the master of a clarinet for this purchase and only then have shown to my wife some photo of this clarinet, have told some features (as I understand them), and have a little more told about what great master of a clarinet now sells this horn to me.
(I will more tell about this great Master a bit later)
And my wife speaks, even if I didn't sell a lens - and so has simply bought a this clarinet for cash - all the same wouldn't abuse me ... She really love me and she like my hobby too))
