I just got a great CD of French music played by Ronald Van Spaendonck, which I hadn't heard before even though it was made in 1997. http://www.amazon.com/French-music-clarinet-Ronald-Spaendonck/dp/B0049BX0IU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1298517006&sr=8-1

Poulenc Sonata
Debussy Petite Piece
Debussy Premiere Rhapsodie
Milhaud Scaramouche
Gaubert Fantaisie
Saint-Saens Sonata
Pierne Canzonetta
Honneger Sonatine
Francaix Theme and Variations

Everything about it is amazing and perfect: technique, tone, musicianship. I've listened to it half a dozen times with my ears hanging out.

Ken, don't forget about the incredible playing of Alexandre Tharaud. For me, Alexandre is what makes the recording, although Ronald is wonderful

Ken- that's really funny, I discovered this CD 1 day before you did. I was also blown away by the playing of Van Spaendonck. So many of my personal ideals of tone, legato, intonation and taste are present in his playing. I also find the pianist to be a really wonderful musician. However, I do find myself wishing that Van Spaendonck used a tiny bit of vibrato every now and then...

Good to hear this news Ken! I've seen it a few times, almost bought it, and was utterly put off by the ugly cover! A lesson for me here ....judging a book by its cover ... boy I'm superficial sometimes!
... all which begs the question: what is the best CD cover you've seen on a clarinet collection? Back in the days of record collecting this was a pretty big deal. Seems less so now - after all the picture/art has to be so much smaller. I remember some great records with Benny Goodman's big smile, whilst cradling his clarinet.
