Cost for New Pads and adjustments - yamaha cyl 52

I'm looking at buying a used CYL 52 clarinet for my son to play in High SChool.

Approximately how much would it cost to get new pads put on and get it adjusted, assuming there is nothing majorly wrong and that the corks are good?

Is this good instrument? I believe it is wood.

Is there anything I should be looking out for on it when inspecting it? I don't play so I won't necessarily know what I'm looking at.

I was going to have my son (8th grade) inspect it and play it before buying it.

Is $300 a reasonable price assuming it plays OK and comes with a case.

Any comments or feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Eaglerock

Have someone who knows what he is doing go over the instrument before you even consier buying it. An eighth grader is not generally at the level where he can easily detect certain problems that make a clarinet not worth purchasing. If he has a good private teacher, have the teacher check out the instrument. If not, it's worth paying a teacher or a tech to go over the instrument thoroughly prior to purchase.

In this neck of the woods, a repad would run around $200. A bit more if you spec out cork pads on the upper joint. Your price may be higher, based on location. Additional repair work would cost more, so it's critical to have a qualified person go over it.

I bought my Yamaha 52 used, but from a shop that had reconditioned it. It looks new and plays well. The only problem is that it really can't compare to the beautiful tone of my teacher and her Buffer Festival. Of course mine does sound better when she plays it;). For what its worth, 300 plus new pads is about what I paid for mine and it is an easy blowing horn with the right mouthpiece (which for me was a Portnoy BP02 after trying several different VD's: B45, 5RV, M30 Profile 88). I couldn't get the VD's to stop squeeking.

I had a Selmer Signet Soloist completely taken apart, oiled the wood, all new pads and corks for $300.00
