If, as he says, the clarinet is the only woodwind not made of metal, has anyone seen a metal oboe?

"The Horns are separated into two families, the noble brass , and the woodwinds".
Now it's bleeding obvious that the woodwinds are not 'horns'. I often wondered where that misconception came from. Brass players.

No matter what band or orchestra you play with, it is always the brass that destroy balance and intonation when they start overblowing.

Of course, he's obviously having fun at his "woodwind" colleagues' (and our) expense. I'm certain he knows what an oboe is and is only including, for the sake of this monologue, a big band reed section, which would normally be only saxes with clarinet and flute doubles.

Let's not get too carried away pulling this apart. Just have a good chuckle and move on. :)

Anybody thinks Marsalis is just blowing smoke should listen to his show "The Swing Seat" on Sirius/XM satelite radio. Very informative and perceptive. The show where he interviews Joe Temperly, who plays baritone saxophone with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, is a marvelous example of him picking Joe's brain to pull out fascinating information about jazz and saxophone playing and players.

He was just being funny.
