 Jazz lig for alto sax
Author: Benny

Hi! I was wondering if anyone can recommend me a good jazz ligature for alto sax that has a bright sound. I currently play a Rovner Light, on a Selmer C* mp with a Rico Jazz Select 3Medium - 3Hard. I was looking at a Bonade inverted, just to give it a try, and maybe try one on my clarinet too.

If you're planning to do something like play lead in a big band, the C* might be too small for you, regardless of the ligature. Have you tried some of the more jazz oriented mouthpieces, such as a Meyer 5M or 6M or a Rousseau JDX5 or JDX6, a Ponzol Traditional or one of the Runyons?
For me, anyway, the ligature has only a small effect on the sound. FWIW I use both an inverted Bonade and a Rovner with either a Meyer or a Ponzol.

I agree with Mike. The C* doesn't cut it for jazz work. I like his recommendation for the Meyer 5M....it is closer than what I use, but not too far away from the C*. I use a Meyer, I like the 5 okay for light jazz and combo work.....but when I get REAL serious I usually use my 8M. I use a Harrison ligature FWIW.

The Meyers are very good jazz pieces. For more edge and power check out the Runyon Custom Spoiler (formerly known as the Art Pepper model). You get this piece and you won't have to sweat looking for a bright lig.

On alto I play with a Meyer 6m, and find it has more than enough power for most situations. In terms of a ligature, I use a vandoren optimum, then I can adjust the sound a bit more depending on the situation. Very nice tightening mechanism as well, which makes a difference when setup time is a bit limited.

My alto mp is a "Hollywood" Gregory but I hve used the Meyer, Guardalla, Link and Selmer metal Jazz models. The C* is more a "classical" style mp and will not give you the power you need in a jazz environment. My ligs are Winslows, but I do have an inverted Bonade that I used to use and still like. Hope this helps some. Good luck.
