 Hot Rod Clarinet

Hey, I was scrolling through ebay and found an add titled HOT ROD your Saz or Clarinet mouthpiece! Simple mpc mod. It is a "baffle" that goes inside the mouthpiece that make the air go through it and causes it to be louder. Anyone have any opinions?

It's similar to an old "trick" many of the Greek folk clarinetists use on the mpc's for their Albert clarinets. Basically, we melt some wax into that part of the mouthpiece. I believe it has the same effect.

....and somebody at one time marketed a small lump of plastic-like material for this purpose. I think I have one laying around somewhere.

I experimented with making a temporary baffle (the guy who taught me the trick described it as a "battle-axe baffle") out of chewing gum a few years ago. The result more than justified Shadow Cat's characterization of the clarinet as an infernal screech-stick! The baffle did make the clarinet louder, but also made it extremely shrill. If your electric drill breaks down and you need to put a hole in the wall, a mouthpiece rigged with a battle-axe baffle probably could do it.

When I was young and foolish, I tried the same thing. The tone was an intolerable screech, like a cat being pulled to pieces by its legs and tail.

[DISCLAIMER] NO CATS WERE HARMED!! IT'S JUST MY ATTEMPT TO DESCRIBE THE SOUND.
