Map of Arundo donax in France?
Author: Lelia Loban 2017

Does anybody know exactly where commercially harvested Arundo donax grows in France and whether those are the same areas harvested in the period just before WWI? I've got good maps of France and I know the cane now grows in marshy areas in the Var, but I'd like something more specific -- nearby towns, river names and so forth, or better yet, longitude and latitude that I can use with my WWI maps.

Might as well tell you why I want to know, because this group could answer the question if anybody could.... I'm trying to figure out whether any reed-growing areas being harvested actively between 1914-1916 were directly impacted by the major battles of WWI. Was reed cane hard to get in New York (at Fischer's, for instance) during that period?

Since I'm asking on behalf of a fictional French expatriate clarinet maker and a fictional American clarinet player who both live in New York City in 1914-16, I can squeak around their facts as necessary, up to a point. (Maybe the supplier ships reed cane on one of the freighters the Germans sink in the Atlantic, for instance.) But lies, oops, I mean creative inventions, look so much better when they can cozy up next to the truth....

Thanks for any insights--

Lelia,

...you may want to ask the Rigotti Company (http://www.rigotti.fr/), they're in Cocolin (near St. Tropez) and might have some more historical data.
They're small enough to have their own caneyards (or how their fields are called) and might come up with some interesting tidbits.

I see quantities of reed growing in the Var to the east of Toulon in the area between Hyeres and Pierrefeu and also along the coast (more or less) from Hyeres to Bormes les Mimosas. Can't help you with battles of WW1, I thought that was largely in Northern France and Belgium. Of course VanDoren are based in La Londe. Production of Arundo donax is seen in the area as essentially a local industry and this is celebrated each year with a festival, see: http://www.festivaldelanche.com/. Contact me at michael.baines0280@orange.fr if you need help with the french
You'll also find reed growing and commercialised to the west of Toulon in the area around Ollioules.

hope this helps,

Mike

These answers are very helpful. Thanks so much, Mike and Ben! (I read French, but thanks also for the offer of help with it, Mike.)

Yes. It started out as a short story. I thought I could write it in about two weeks. Alas, it ran amok. Trying to cut it to a publishable magazine length made it read like an outline. I gave up and divided it into chapters.
