 Vandoren Blackmaster Reeds
Author: Ron

None of the reed comparison charts compare the Vandoren Blackmaster reeds to the other Vandoren reeds. Does anyone know how the strength of the Vandoren Blackmaster reeds compare with the Vandoren Blue Box and V12s? I've heard that the Blackmaster reeds are softer than the equivanlent strengths in the BB and V12's. Does anyone know how the Blackmasters compare? Thanks.

In my experience, they are pretty similar to V12s in strength.

Keep in mind, it's not an apples to apples comparison. The V12 is thicker, wider, longer, and with a different tip shape. If your mouthpiece fits with a v12 pretty well, the blackmaster will be much smaller, especially the shape of the tip of the mouthpiece and rails.

If you're playing v12 3.5's, try a box of 3.5's. Even if the reed itself is a harder piece of cane, its smaller size may compensate for that added resistance.

I would play a 4 in V12 and 3.5 in the Blackmaster, sometimes a 4 depending on the cane. I have found the Blackmaster to be thicker in the heart of the reed, but it is not as wide as a V12 and not as long. When I try a new brand of reeds I always buy several boxes to allow for variance in the cane, in several different strengths.

For me Blackmasters feel like they are between 3.5 and 4 Traditional. I use them with a Gigliotti P34 and vanilla Rovner ligature normally, It's a warm setup. I can't get a sound I really like out of BM's with my B45, I use 56's for that.

You also have to remember that Blackmaster reeds also might be too small for some French mouthpiece facings.
