Gig Bag for standard R13 Single Case
Author: Paul Aviles

I have never been in the market for a cover/gig bag so this is really new to me. Am I just supposed to look at Altieri or are there others that provide protection and accessory storage that warrant attention?

Paul...It probably depends on how much stuff you want to carry...or how unwieldy that stuff might be (ie, oversize music folders or notebooks.).

I bought my Altieri bag 2 1/2 years ago and am very pleased with it. The standard R13 case fits snugly and the two outside zip pockets easily hold the music, reed cases, pencils, tuner and other items I carry with me. I like the insulated interior and the stitching is strong.

Mine has a shoulder strap; it's not designed as a backpack.

Before I bought it, I looked at other brands on music gear Web sites and read through various threads on the bulletin board. I also looked at briefcase or messenger bags offered by Land's End, L.L. Bean, Timbuktu and other companies. Nothing seemed to fill the bill.

Ultimately, for the price, I think I got the best value. The Altieri bag wears well, looks good and, even more imporant, holds everything I need. The only thing I wish is that the Buffet case was a bit less clunky.

I had a gig bag for my double case that I destroyed in two years. I replaced it with an Altieri bag that has lasted nine years and still looks great.

I wouldn't spend my $$ on anything else. Good luck in your search!

You certainly can't go wrong with Altieri.

I have used a Lands End Attache forever. It has lots of storage and wears like iron. They are a nice option.

Are the Alteri bags actually insulated or is it just extra padding? I'm also in need of a replacement cover bag for my R13 small 'pouchette' case and given the recent temps in my city, an insulated case would be an added bonus. But the Alteri double case I looked at appeared to be padding that doesn't cover the
full interior, just the sides.

Anyone else live in cold climes that has a solution aside from not taking a horn outside? I always make sure it's well hydrated, especially in winter. Two friends
both had cracks appear recently and both horns (pro models) are more than three years old.

Cheers.

The solution I think is to have the horn only where YOU would be comfortable. That is, from the warm house into a warm car, into the warm restaurant (or whatever), and back to your warm house. NEVER leave your horn in a car, garage, storage shed or just out and about outside in frigid temperatures.

If I see what your looking for properly, it seems to be more of a "thermos" than a cover. The problem with that is your clarinet is not heated.

Having lived in some cold places the Altieri bags I've owned were sufficient.

If you can't find anything better you could simply add some hand towels on the inside along the zipper for REALLY bad weather!
