 Vacation and practice time, lots!

What a great thing a vacation is in a warm place, in our own vacation/retirement home, without anyone else here except friends who live elsewhere besides with me! I`ve enjoyed so much playing some Saint Saans and Brahms and other composers. The windows aren`t much of anything as far as keeping the sound from the neighbors so that puts a kink into my practice time...

The dog, once she knew where the sound was coming from, is happy with it and occupies herself in whatever business makes a dog content while the practicing continues, sometimes just lying down beside the door. The warm temperatures and moderate humidity means that the only condensation has been in the side Bb key (always, it`s a weak spot) but nowhere else to speak of. No need to warm up, it`s always warm... until the end of the week when work duties call once again, then back to the cold, cold north and struggling to keep 30% humidity in the house. Oh well, it really is great these few days.

I, too, am looking forward to escaping to a warmer climate, if only for a week. What I do is some fun practice--solo's, repretoire stuff, etc--during the noon hour (when most are outside by the pool or seashore). I also like to sit in with the local VFW Band for their Tues evening rehearsal--as they graciously allow me to do so. Over the years of vacationing, I have sat in with some wonderful organizations from Washington, DC all the way down the east coast to Miami. It's important to contact the bands (or orchestra) personallel manager first, and not just "show up" unexpectedly. Usually, a chair is found somewhere down in the section, however during my last guest spot with the Greater Miami Symphonic Band, I sat in for the principal clarinetist who was absent that eve. This year, I will just stay put in the Pompano Beach/Fort Lauderdale area--less travel hassel and more time for the sun--and play a little third clarinet with the VFW fellows.

Then, the always difficult transition back to the frozen tundra of Wisconsin...but, like my grandpa always used to say on his Feb birthday, "Spring is just around the corner". But I do love that week of fun in the sun with "no need to warm up". LOL

Living in Florida sure is nice in the winter. (I have to run away in the summer though, everything plays flat and everything else melts including me)

Of course, I'm so full of hot air, do I really ever need to warm up?

(Alright, bad pun time over.)

Generally when I travel (I'm not an orchestral clarinetist, I am a jazz/swing gal), I have groups of folks I contact first that I've either played with before or have been invited to. All else, I do what William does. I'm not a big league right now, but I get around and enjoy the music and find many musicians all over the country to share the arts with.

That would be nice to hook up with a band in town while on vacation. Dont know about hubby, though. Here, if the people sing, its something - let alone play any instrument. Practice time is making way for having friends over and for going down to the ocean for some swim time. Maybe hang out at a thermal pool up in the mountains. Hmmm...
