The vandoren leather ligature is now being made like the optimum, with the both side pull of the screw, and the metal plate is now the optimum "curvy lines" plate.
Any opinions of the design change? I haven't tried them head to head, but it's certainly a different ligature with the plate change.

There is probably no difference in the plates since the reed curved away from the flat edges of the metal plate of the old leather model.
I don't get what you are saying about "both side pull." Looking at an Optimum I am even more confused. Can you clarify?

He means instead of like a normal "rovner" style ligature where the thumb screw tightens only against one post, the optimum has a threaded bar by the thumb screw, and a reverse thread on the other post. Meaning if you were to turn the thumb screw, BOTH sides compress inwards to tighten from both directions instead of the thumb screw only tightening one side and "pushing" the ligature towards the other post.
Hope I've thoroughly over-confused you now.
(Take another look at a rovner vs an optimum, and you'll see threads on TWO sides of the optimum with a smooth portion in the middle that the plate attaches to, and you'll see that the rovner only has threads on the side of the thumb screw and it smooth for the remainder.)

So the whole mechanism is on the BOTTOM so it smacks into your chin..........what's the point of having a leather Optima?

No, it's still an inverted ligature.
My point is that the plate has been changed. The way that it pulls center, or side doesn't matter to me at all, except that it's a better mechanism as it won't strip easily as the side design has done (I have a student who's ligature screw was partially stripped).

A bit of cork grease usually resolves this problem, unless, of course, one fastens the ligature like a gorilla.

Cursory test of New vs. old versions with a student on Wednesday. Neither of us could tell any difference, playing or listening. Yes, the plate is different, but the net effect is the same - rails running down the center of the reed. The screw on the new one seems like a better design, but mine is still going strong with the old design.
