Has anyone heard that Morrie Backun finished his contract with LeBlanc? I just saw him in NY and he is currently taking names for the new MoBa Clarinet that he is designing. I got to feel the key work and the softness and ease of playing is amazing!

Even.his current clarinets (at least the bliss line) have great keywork. VERY comfortable and smooth. It seems very soon for his current Leblanc contract to run out though. Maybe I just don't know how long these things run, but for Leblanc to be pinning some top clarinets on him it seems like they would have agreed to a longer contract.

To tie a couple of recent BB threads together, I calculate that one could purchase approximately 20 somewhat-used (playable) Penzel-Mueller clarinets for the estimated price of a new Backun or other current top-line clarinet.
Bang for the buck, baby!

this could be in reference to his Facebook page. On it he said "is busy working on the new Backun Clarinet"
and on his backun Musical Services Facebook page in a letter to artists it states "The Backun Clarinet makes its official debut in 2011"
with that it goes on and states
"With this new chapter beginning, I wanted to inform you that my contract to design instruments for Conn-Selmer, Inc. has been completed. Over the past several years I have designed Leblanc by Backun Clarinets for the Leblanc brand. This has been a wonderful opportunity and a great learning experience. "
for more info i recommend you see his facebook page Backun Musical Services
FYI, I have no connections what so ever to Morrie Backun or any of his services .... just providing some info.

At current eBay prices, 50 - 70 PM's would probably be more like it. Would this be better than one Backun? Well, they would certainly burn longer.
Best regards,

I'm on the list for one and I can't wait to play it. I had a chance to play the prototype Leblancs and the ones I have played better than the prototype. I'v had a chance to play Ricardo's (bore and tone hole configuration of the new one without the new sexy key design) The new key design is in a word, Beautiful, without springs these keys were working and feeling nice.
I with some photos would be posted of this clarinet just to give us all a look.

I for one have told my wife that when I die to buy a set and bury them with me so I can play them in Heaven. (If I end up the other way at least they will burn nice and add some color) ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com

Well that's an interesting looking horn.
I wonder why one would want gold plated posts with silver keys? I just want gold plated keys.
Geez, I thought $8000 for a PAIR of clarinets was pricey. It's a brave new world.

Wowww I thought the Buffet Tosca was very expensive and overpriced in my opinion and the Legacy to be expensive too but I've never tried it but this is ridiculous.
And my I remind you that some of the best players in the world play just on the ordinary R-13 clarinet starting with Mark Nuccio.

I checked it out at NAMM. Very beautiful horns. Awesome, amazing sound, however now that I have seen the prices on Backun's site. That's ridiculous. For the MOBA A clarinet price, I can get a Buffet 1193 Prestige Bass for that price, and almost enough for the Selmer Paris one. That's ridiculous. I thought Wurlitzer clarinets were riduculous, but cmon!!!

I'm not an expert in these things, but the website is pretty lavish and well thought out, designed to murmur 'top of the line' like the interior of a Bentley. It looks like he's got some serious money behind him, and perhaps enough market research to lead him to believe he'll actually sell some horns (although maybe the horns are intended partly as bait to move more barrels, mouthpieces, and bells). I don't mean that disrespectfully, I'm sure the horns are a wonder to play, I just mean I'd sure be interested in seeing his business plan for all this, especially 2nd and 3rd year projections.
Website needs more closeups of the clarinets, though. Those of us who goober through the Bentley showroom window at the unaffordables on the showroom floor like us plenty of color pix.

ok, I'm looking at WWBW at flutes and a handmade soldered tone hole Haynes flute is $10750.
pearl flute same configuration is 8750.oo to 10,000.
Yamaha julius baker edition is $9500,
Lorre and mariquax oboes are 8995.
A fox 601 basson is 20,000
Leblanc Legacy 5949.00
buffet Tosca 5890
I was at Namm, I had a chance to play the new clarinets longer than anyone. I probably logged 8 plus hours on it and I can say it is built better and sounds better than any clarinet I've ever played. You can say you can't afford it but if you play it you wont be able to say it's not better

Tom,
I am hoping that the timbre is close to a Rossi. Can you comment on this?
Also, any interesting bore configurations on which you can comment would also be appreciated.
........thanks,

Tom--exactly; what needed to happen in the clarinet world was for someone to produce a clarinet that's THAT much better, and also THAT much pricier, to really make a splash. The question I'll be interested to see answered, is: will major symphony players, and major name soloists, start using the Backun? Once they do, the horn may well become 'that thing you "have" to have if you're serious about your music,' sort of like the R13 was at one time. There are plenty of major players for whom the three-grand price difference will be inconsequential alongside the benefits gained, just as there are plenty of flautists who'd willingly pay upwards of $20k for a rose-gold Powell, because it's THAT much better.

If it's the only clarinet you need for the rest of your life, then it's a bargain.
