The arched tongue thing that the first person was talking about is called anchor tonguing, and as far as I know, it's bad. I used to anchor tongue and it's a very hard habit to break, but now I'm finally beginning to learn how to tongue with the tip instead

Tongueing with the tip is my method but the tongue is also arched towards the top part of the mouth ....... works for me.

Keep Swinging,

Basically it is whatever works for you. In my mind there is no certain way......because not everything works for everyone.

Keep Swinging,

Tip to tip (or very close to the tip of the reed) is the generally accepted way of tonguing. Anchor tonguing (using the middle of the tongue) is not acceptable by any teacher I know.

There are other specialty tounging techniques (double, triple, slap, and - one I just heard about - side to side) but those would be learned much later, if at all.

I mentioned tonguing back on the tongue. I do not approve of anchoring the tongue. The tip of the tongue floats freely but does not strike the reed. Anchoring is not a good method.

With the tip of the tongue on the tip of the reed does one stroke from top to bottom or visa versa?

You do not normally "stroke" or "hit" or "strike" the reed. You start with the tip of the tongue on the reed and then pull the tongue off the reed. There is a discussion further down on the BBS about tonguing and there I have described a tonguing drill recommended by Daniel Bonade in his "Clarinetist's Compendium."
