 Clarinet mouthpiece for oboe?
Author: GBK
Date:   2011-01-27 19:26

A student asked me if such an item exists, or are we looking at the next million dollar idea? Or perhaps not.

I believe there is such a mouthpiece for bassoon, although I've never seen one first hand.

Links anyone?

Years ago (way back in the dark ages around 1964) my father showed me a single reed mouthpiece for the oboe. It looked like a tiny, metal clarinet mouthpiece with a tube attached to insert into the oboe. I don't think it's around anymore, if I can find it I'll post a picture.

I have never seen anything like that since.

My teacher showed me one during undergrad sometime. It sounded horrid lol. I heard of a few of these around still though.

I've got an old single reed oboe mouthpiece and I believe it is a Chedeville. I also have a similar one for the bassoon.......don't play either, however. Both are just residing in my left-overs drawer.

I have one. I'm an oboe player first, always had the thing and it sounded pretty awful. But - I have become a clarinet newbie and I will have to get it out and try it now that I have a sense of 'proper' clarinet embouchure. Of course the reed is 20+ years old and maybe I'll have to try my hand at cutting down a reed for it. If I remember, it is about the diameter of my first finger (and I have girl hands.)

If I can figure out how to post a picture here...I'll be happy to take a pic or two for the curious.

Yes, I have seen several of these over the years you-know-where. I can't think they would be much good for anything except curiosity, or the really desperate doubler. Even a bad oboe embouchure would be better.

The embouchure for these oboe mouthpieces is nothing like that of an oboe, clarinet or soprano sax embouchure - it's a very unique and difficult embouchure to do any justice and one destined to wreck any embouchure you already have for the others.

But worth a try if you like experimenting with strange set-ups.

Still sounds like an oboe but with a thicker, rounder tone.

Let's not forget it was just such an unnatural pairing that gave us ........... the saxophone.

I think those were designed to play either with an Eb clarinet reed or possibly an Ab reed.

Here's the Bassoon Mouthpiece I think that you were referring to:

I have both the Chedville oboe and bassoon mouthpieces. The reeds are smaller than Ab clarinet and Eb clarinet.

Paul,
Speaking from the opinion of someone that has played saxophones with matching mouthpieces made by the Sax firm, I can tell you that the saxophone of today is very different today than its intention.
